Gaya Sa Pelikula (Filipino Series) [Like In The Movies]

Pinoy BL series seem to be catching up to the popularity of the Thai shows. And I must say that they are doing a pretty good job at it. Where Thai series started to get repetitive with so many shows based in a college setting with seemingly similar storylines, Pinoy series are offering the viewers with new and interesting stories and some really good sets and surroundings. This series was 8 episodes of about 25-20 minutes each.

Karl, a 19-year old introvert architecture student is in the middle of an identity crisis. Prior to the start of the second semester in college and forced by his parents, he moves into his uncle's condominium unit so that he can learn to be financially independent. Karl takes on odd jobs online to do so. But when one of his major clients suddenly goes MIA, he is left short on funds and without a means to pay for his utilities. An opportunity presents itself when his cocky neighbor Vlad has to hide from his family and proposes to share Karl's space for the rest of the semestral break in exchange of paying up his monthly rent. Vlad is openly gay and will not hide for anyone. His sister is his pillar of strength. After initial awkwardness, the two boys start warming to each other watching movies, but as expected slowly Vlad starts liking Karl. Karl is not sure what his preferences are yet, but a kiss seals the deal. But while Vlad is out and open , Karl is shit scared for anyone to know about their little secret, which really frustrates Vlad. Things get complicated when Vlad's sister and Karl's uncle come to know the truth, which for some reason embarrasses Karl. Vlad will have none of the waiting because he is done with homophobia growing up. Thankfully the two continue to remain good friends, there by Vlad giving an opportunity to Karl, to come out of his shell and accept the reality.

One of the biggest takeaway for me from this show was telling everyone that being gay is ok. He says he is gay and he is also continuously coaching/ mentoring that its ok to say the word gay. Communication is the key, not only in romantic relationships but also any type of social interactions. He didn’t play mind games, spoke what he thought and felt and it was up to others to accept it or not. I am impressed and happy that the makers provided us the backstory of these main characters. We understand why and where are their actions coming from. If society did not present being gay as something bad, Vlad would never assume his dad left coz of that. He would never assume his mom was against his relationship because she did not want her son to be gay. Similarly, for Karl, he is under pressure for living the life of a brother he never met and not to disappoint his parents. External circumstances forced him to face it when he was not ready, when he felt emotionally confused and vulnerable. The two characters had some amazing chemistry. Vlad's sister Judit initially seemed over hyped and funny fag hag characters that are necessary for such shows but we eventually start to learn her point of view as well. There is a back story about everyone and everything and with such small episodes, I applaud the makers to have been successful in reaching out that to us. And one brand new thing that has never been seen by me in any other BL shows is the end credit scene. With every episode, the premise may be same, but with that 2-30 second scene they show us the relationship start, progress and where it is heading. It was truly well thought of and executed. There are many memorable lines in this show, that makes me strongly believe that the series is promoting positive change in people's thinking about gay people. Statements like "Do not be scared of the word, you can say it, it is not an insult, I do not mind". " I’m gay but I still can’t tell papa, I love Vlad but I am not as brave as him", "I don’t want to be silent about my love, I want to be out there, I deserve it just like you deserve to take your time inside", " I know I am not doing anything wrong but why am I still afraid" very intelligently take this show to new heights. Kudos to the dialogue writers. Every small little details has a reason behind it. Right from Vlad not liking his hair to be touched to why Judit tries to hard to be an ally.

This was a series that was made with a purpose and they executed perfectly with some great acting. The boys are good to look at and act well. There was too much music and sounded nice, but that was a bot of deterrent personally for me, especially because of the language. Also one of the episodes where the power goes off was a bit too heavy and not fun for me. But besides this, I can't find much fault with the show. The maker in an interview said "The show is aimed to extend its message to every queer people that whenever they are ready to reclaim their story, we are here to welcome them." And once you see the show, you will understand and agree to this completely. (8/10)

Fabulous. I loved this one so much I don't even know where to start. A beautiful message delivered through an incredible plot, full of emotion and sensibilty, and a great cast. They all have their own background story to act the way they do (even side characters like the ally sister and the neighbour), and make the whole thing so alive. Mostly it's brilliant, every little detail had been planned. Like the story of the dead body in the dresser that seemed out of place at first. And then Vlad opens a dresser and a photo of Karl's dead brother falls from it. Or when Karl makes pancakes for Vlad's birthday (while pretending to be boyfriends in front of Judith Vlad calls Karl his pancake uwu). Even the end credits were used in a clever way. Honestly the last end credits where you see Karl alone at first broke may heart. I thought even if he reunited with Vlad, it was not enough and Karl was still alone. And then Vald appeared, I think I jumped of joy out of my couch. The music is amazing too. Then there is the countless statements and messages and they all ring so true. Sometimes it's good to remember the "come when you are ready" thing, there is no wright, no wrong, just time needed. For us gays and for our close ones too. Karl: "Can't we stay in here forever?" Vald: "I want to take you everywhere...". You can feel so much love coming from both of them, yet they are so sadly incompatible at the same time. There are a lot of memorable scenes for me, like Karl release dancing, the alternate dinner... I still can't believe how such a small series had such a big impact on me.

The writing in this series is impeccable. I’m not bothered by the music though cause it’s message resonates the situation of the moment in the scene with ambient tone to it. I really like Anna’s message about Karl staying on his comfort zone. I really loved the line “I want to be out there, I deserve it just like you deserve to take your time inside." It’s really a great series. I rated it 7.5/10.

That line and so many more are really the lifeline of this show. The dialogue writers definitely deserve an applaud for their thought provoking lines.

I still can’t get over with the writing of this series. It’s so beautiful. I like it that they leave it with an open ending. It’s more realistic. The alternate ending that Karl think, is the ending we’re getting if only our society doesn’t think that being straight is the default. GSP holds a special place in my heart. The song "Fools by nathan & mercury that played in episode 7 hits me right into the feels. I would like to thank Sailor maan to recommending this to me. Filipino BL series really giving Thai BL a run for their money. After back reading my comment I noticed I mistyped my rating. It’s supposed to be 8.5 instead of 7.5 my bad.

So happy you liked it! The ost was playing non stop in my car for weeks too... But really I will give credit where credit is due, you should thank Golu as he is the one who introduced me to Filipino bl series when I didn't have time to watch normal movies. Next thing I knew I was totally addicted to the genre, browsing his blog for more, and now trying to see longer thai ones. So once again thank you so much for this incredible blog!!!
Now hedgehog, as Golu suggested go see "hello stranger" as it's really good. I'll follow your recommantation too and go watch Ben x Jim ;-)

I agree, the soundtrack of this series is one beautiful, I’m happy you appreciate too. Yeah you’re right, as I said before in my previous comments scattered around in this blog, Thank you for your wonderful place you created where beautiful stories are introduced. I already started watching Hello stranger and I’m already liking. Hope you enjoy Ben x Jim too. :)

BTW, the power outage scene where they tell scary joke is really a Filipino thing. We usually do that and the cadaver story that Anna told, that who ever heard the story will find the 3rd missing cadaver in their closet. Remember when vlad open the closet to get a blanket he found the picture of karl’s dead brother. You might missed that little detail.

I am loving reading these comments you guys. This just started as a passion project for myself many years back penning down my thoughts now what I see, and its always heartening and promising to see comments from you all and all the wonderful recommendations. Thank you to you all.
I Amin middle of two series, so as soon as I am done with those, I will pick up Ben x Jim.

Interesting tidbit about the scary scene. That was lost on me.
Thanks to all of you guys ! After reading the review and your comments, I immediately started watching. We can tell this is a very low budget production, but once again, good acting and writing are all it takes to deliver a good show. Vlad is welcome to switzerland any time ! ( Please no one let my boyfriend know I said that !!!).
Jokes aside, I really liked every minute of it. No high school, no gay clichés, so refreshing. I will definitely watch more philippino material now.
Oh and I will recommend recommend why r u. I hesitated a bit before watching because some viewers were left with a mild impression, but I absolutely loved it. Directly entered my top 5. It's a sheer thaï BL, with high school, juniors, silly picturesque side characters, confusing storyline, singing, love, heartbreak, crying, product placement and everything we can expect from a GMMTV show. Yet it remains very good especially for the acting.

According to the writers of GSP. There’s going to be a season 2 for this series. The script is already written but it’s impossible to film it now due to pandemic. Cause most of the filming of season 2 will be held outside, in a university to be exact, I just hope this pandemic will end soon. By the time it comes,I hope the actors who played karl & vlad is still available cause the writer is not going to do season 2 if the 2 original actors will not play their respective role.

I don’t think we’re going to get season 2 in this series because of allegation on the GSP writer of Sexual harassment on one of the actor in the show Paolo Pangilinan (Karl). They already preparing to shoot the season 2 of this series until this issue surfaced. It’s still unknown what is the plan of the studio that produced the show, if they’re going to do the season 2 with different writer or do a new series.
Golu said…
Oh well! Maybe lets leave the good memories this show as is. Sometimes a badly made sequel can ruin the whole experience.

Agreed, but I wish they make another series with the two lead actors, they have a great chemistry. BTW, are you for Gameboys the movie?

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who

Ultimate masturbation: Shigoki no yama (Japanese) [The Ultimate Masturbation]

I would never know what was the point behind making this film. Was it supposed to be a comedy, cos it wasn't. It wasn't even porn. It was just a silly attempt at making something absolutely senseless and ridiculous. The story, as well as direction is equally shoddy. You could laugh for having seen something so bad, but I wouldn't call that comedy. An old man runs a camp about gay masturbation. The explanation given is that gays masturbate for pleasure unlike straight men, for whom the act is seen as shame or because they can't find a woman. One day a straight man shows up and wants to join the camp for his thesis. After discussion, he is allowed in. Rules include that you can masturbate together, you can masturbate one another, but there is no fellatio or anal sex. Some students of course breaks rule. The teacher then talks about 2 forms of masturbation which gives ultimate pleasure. He shows one without touching and then refuses to talk of the other. Somehow suddenly,
