The Writer

As per its director, The Writer is a film that explores the art of conversation. And I couldn't agree more. Two people in an apartment talking. Sure we will talk about further nuances of things, but watching this film I wondered if this would have been better enjoyed as a play. You see, for films like this you need to have patience, which is scarce in today's time. A story of two friends and former lovers who reconnect after any many years asking questions about what defines us as human beings, whether politically, sexually or nationally. Their talk jumps back and forth from the public to the private, as if in an attempt to provide an overview of past repression and today’s prejudices towards queer people through private experiences, against the backdrop of ongoing political turbulence between the East and the West. Ethnically Russian and now Lithuanian Dima is in New York for an interview. He meets his old friend and ex-lover Kostas (original Lithuanian and now American). Thro...

The Lawyer (Lithuanian/English)

To be honest, I am not very sure what was the basic theme that the film maker was trying to show and focus on. There seemed multiple themes going on, or you can see it was sort of like episodic events that happening with hour main protagonist. Sure, enough in the second half, he gets a purpose and the film focuses on immigration and LGBT issues but it takes forever to reach that point. Marius is a corporate lawyer in Vilnius. He is a player who spends time with friends and chasing young lovers for sex. Marius decides to take a trip a trip to Belgrade to meet Ali. Ali asks for Marius' help in moving to other part of Europe, which he initially refuses sayi...

Nuo Lietuvos Nepabegsi (Lithuanian) [You Can’t Escape Lithuania]

This film for some reason is being promoted as a gay film, which, to be honest, is wrong in my opinion. One of the main characters is gay but the film is actually about friendship and what you will do for your friends. It shows the complexity of personal relationships between family members, friends and lovers. Also, this is the first film that I am seeing from Lithuania, so I was quite excited to see the film and see what their cinema has to offer. At the outset, let me mention that this is slightly an abstract film, especially the ending. Rich and gay film-maker Ramos is now with his boyfriend Carlos, whom he met in Mexico when he was showcasing his last film. His best friend an actress of his films Indre comes one morning and explains him how she accidentally ended up killing her mother. She is terrified of jail and Ramos comes up with a plan to help her escape from Lithuania. Carlos reluctantly agrees to help, knowing very little about what exactly is going on. A road trip beg...
