Cherry Magic: The Movie (Japanese)

Cherry Magic is one of those dramas that was unanimously liked. I didn't read a single bad review, probably because the premise was in general a very positive one and it didn't have an unnecessary drama. With its two charming leads, we all rooted for them. The film is a logical extension to the love story of Adachi and Kurosawa and just shows us how naturally their relationship is progressing over the years. The film might be simple and probably cliched for some in its story but it still has all the tenderness, charm and purity that one expects based on the show.

Adachi and Kurosawa are a couple now (but unknown to everyone around them) and they enjoy each other's company. Adachi can still hear Kurosawa's inner thoughts. One day Adachi gets an opportunity to move to a different city for 8 months as a work promotion. He is excited about the prospect but also worried since Kurosawa had made so many plans of them spending time together. But when Kurosawa mentions that he is supportive of him going, he moves to a different city. He gets busy there and we see a slight lack of communication between them. When overworked Adachi gets into a minor accident at work, Kurosawa rushes to his help and the duo finally tan about their innermost feelings and fears. That night they also consulate their relationship which leads to Adachi losing his special powers and he is actually happy about it. The accident also makes them realize that since they are officially not a couple, in times of emergency, neither of them will be notified of the other's situation. They decide to come out to the people who they care about. The film then shows they both introducing the other to their families and how the families react, initially hesitant but eventually accepting. Kurosawa finally proposes to Adachi and the film ends happily with a wedding.

I think the moral of the story is very much about embracing and loving the simple side of life. Just like the series, I really enjoyed the small little things and the lack of drama just for the sake of it. When Adachi moves to a different city, I feared that they will create drama, but when they meet after few months and talk about their insecurities, both the characters felt so real and vulnerable. I guess when you are new in a relationship, we all fear about certain things and are fearful of completely opening up ourselves for our love. And that's natural. What was nice to see they completely open upland see how the other person was almost as unsure as they themselves were. Also the one big change in the film was that we see a more confident Adachi both professionally and personally, and this comes out when he meets Kurosawa's family. This time he gets an opportunity to show his true love for Kurosawa. The film had emotion, drama and subtle romance, but just like the series my issue is that they don't really show any physical closeness. Forget anything sexual, but even for a simple kiss, the camera would pan out and you have to imagine they kissed. I mean its 2022, and I am sure we can do better tp portray them as a real life couple. Despite this, they made me believed in their story, they made me emotional and made my heart flutter. The film is tender, simple, probably cliche, but full of love. One statement that stood out for me is when Adachi says "When you're weak, I'll be strong. And when I'm weak, I'd appreciate a helping hand from you." A statement like this sums up what a happy positive relationship should look like. As actors the two leads exude the same charm and it never feels that there was any gap. They are handsome, charing and very much into their character.

I would recommend this film for sure, especially when you are feeling low and want to just get some good positive vibes in your life and to hope that everything will be ok. (7.5/10)

Boy how I love this series and its positive vibes. You described it perfectly Golu, enjoy the little things in life together. It was such a pleasure to see again this heartwarming couple and watch their evolution. I liked how they tracked a little bit back in time before Adachi lost his powers and actually see his positive reaction when he loses them because he learnt to talk his inner thoughts with Kurosawa. I loved Adachi's evolution, gaining confidence in both himself and in their relationship.
The long distance relationship right after the beginning of it (with the future love of your life *heart*) brings back lots of memories, making this even more enjoyable to watch for me. The meeting with both families was the best part though. The one with Adachi's family brought such a pure feeling of joy I was left hurt smiling too much. It is so different how they introcude their loved ones to their family in Japan! (I had the same feeling in "what did you eat yesterday" and other japanese show). I'll always love witnessing the cultural differences.
Haha for the kiss I think it was an totally deliberate intention! Just like what they did with the elevator in the series. Fans were desperatly asking for a kiss, social media were filled with this request. That we didn't get in the sequels. Honestly this ultimate teasing had me laugh hard. "You want a kiss? There. They are kissing just in front of you. What? You couldn't see anything because of the camera angle? Oh sorry, our bad, that is really soooo infortunate..." *smiling devil tone*
Now I'm just looking forward to watching the thai remake. I know you are too Golu, I know you secretly are (so secretly that even you are not aware of it ;p)

lol.. u r so right. I would actually wait to watch the Thai version and see how good (or bad) of a job they have done. I agree with all your comments about this show. Something about this endearing couple and also seeing all this cultural nuances when introducing to the families. At least watching all kinds of global contents is helping me personally understand different countries and their cultures.

So I am at that point again, where I need some recommendations on what series to watch next, since I have literally like 50 different ones on my drive and picking up one of them feels scary

Recommendations time! I feel bad because I can't keep up with your movies recommandations, namely Bros that I missed in the theatres...
For thai ones I liked "Big dragon". It is flawed but I still had a really good time. There is also a special one : "180° longitude passes through us". It didn't do it for me but many people love it and I can't deny its obvious qualities (I was hooked too in the beginning).
If they are on your list I suggest you skip Fahlanruk, Oh my sunshine night, check out and Hard love mission forever. "Ghost host ghost house" and "The eclipse" are OK for me, with some really good moments and some bad/boring ones.
For Japan go with "More than words" please. Then "Mr unlucky has no chance but to kiss" was really fun, I absolutely loved it. It has sort of a manga feel so I don't know if it's going to be your thing.
More recommendations should follow soon! (for the good ongoing ones)

Thanks for these sir. I am already watching 180 degree right now and should post my thoughts in a couple of days.

Official poop-checker reporting here :D Just finished the "Star and Sky" series, both "Star in my mind" and "Sky in your heart" + specials. Fluff, yes. Continuity, yes. Locations, yes. My favorite BL-mother - YES! But there are a few your cringes (khm-brand placement :D ) and the missed chance in the very beginning would probably cause you some serious aches and pains... and there's nothing new, really. OK, punishment for driving under influence is rather rare in Thai series and a really horribly failed "malaria" is also new, but that's about it. Assessment: no poop, but no gold either.

"Big Dragon" - voting up as well :) The beginning is stronger than the end, but it gave me loads of yes-moments. The bodyguards, the opening song, rather bold NC scenes and "it's just TIME". Yes from me. P.S! What's with the "to be continued in S2" - ?

"The Eclipse" - YES! Although the curse-storyline was a bit weak for me and I have an acute allergy for private schools' brainwashing (luckily the producers seem to share my opinion), the actors playing the two main characters were amazing. I noticed them as supports in other series and was looking forward to seeing them as headliners. Well, they realized their previous experiences and did what they're best at: supported. Each other. Like two flames keeping each other aflame.

"Check out" and "Hard love mission" - not for you, sorry. Can't forbid if curiosity gets the best of you, but a no from me. Both have some my favorite tropes, like "have met before" and photographers at work, good female supports, so I had something to watch. But the stuff around the "something" was weak. For you it would be a waste of time.

"Paint with love" - a reluctant yes. Many my favorite tropes, but not sure about you. Slow periods and quite many "have already seen this a few times". A few very good laughs, but I would have liked more of those.

"Oh my sunshine night" - another reluctant yes. The main STORY is rather good, however the SCRIPT around it is too Thai (blanks and a few "meh?" and "WHAT?"). What I absolutely loved was the surprise of HOW well Thai acting style works in telenovela script. While I can't watch telenovelas due to my allergy toward second-hand embarrassment, this combination worked for me.

"Fahlanruk" - too many my things, therefore loved it :D Soundtrack, twins, meet-cute, two gutsy girls, wise best friends, a few thought-provoking lines... But while loving it and smiling myself, I noticed your cringes, especially absolutely shameless brand placement and one extremely artless first kiss. If you're interested in watching another "my" thing, then yes. This, btw, was the series where I read "director of pornography" instead of "director of photography" :D

"Self" - short enough :D Liked the "stole a page from Harry Potter" storyline around twin mirrors. Japanese "Eternal yesterday" is halfway, liking it so far, afraid of the ending. Seriously afraid.

"Work from heart" - no-no-no-NO! Think "YYY"... "No" is a full sentence here :D

I was waiting for your recommendations too Miisu.
Thanks to both of you, I think I have a shortlist at least of next 3-4 series that I can focus on. Its just so hard to keep catching up on all these shows. Just when you think you are starting to watch them, 10 other new series start and throw you off the track. lol

BL shows literally have a factory in Asia.

If it were just 10 new series, I would consider it doable, but that tsunami seems to be multiplied and followed by a flood from all directions. Chrissake, I'm beginning to doubt my abilities to keep up with that :D

What do I have to do to convince you to include "WtFock" S3 (Belgian Skam, "Isak" season) :D ? It's traditionally short and ends with Christmas party, so it fits the season... Pretty please - ?
Golu said…
yes please ! I will sign the petition for that too

Noooooo Miisu, you lured me into watching a skam episode and now I'm addicted again!!! I hope you're happy, I blame it all on you (so basically : thank you!! XD)
Golu I agree with Miisu you should avoid "self" and "work from heart", even if they are short. Oh and "What if" (this... thing doesn't even have an ending).
I'd say "Star and sky" and "Paint with love" are just your regular thai BL.
I forgot to mention "Dear Doctor, I'm coming for soul" that has an interresting concept (love between a doctor and a grim reaper), a nice albeit slow burn romance but a poor execution at times. At least it doesn't have the university set up!
I agree it's impossible to keep up with the number of series released... Never heard of "less quantity more quality"? Maybe with the 3 of us we can have them all sorted out haha
Miisu said…
Great minds etc :D I was thinking the same thing watching another Youtube selection of "new Thai BL in 2023" - it's far from easy to sort through the tsunami-flood of new series, and some old ones are still waiting in the list. On the other hand, actually being careful what I'm wishing for, wishing for quality over quantity in that region would probably result in 1 series in 2 years :D Dammit, the victims of the Grand Darkness here need the fluff therapy a little more frequently.

@Sailor Maan: Glad to be guilty of spreading the Skam virus :P And since I'm already guilty and you're already infected, there's more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU6aiXYDfrk&list=PL_gFhiIDuepsU6fOwBHkhbR4S0ruM6gN_ (the WtFock short-clip-inbetween-season before actual S4)
Mischief managed! :D

Thank you both for these further recommendations and pointers to stay away from. I am gonna try my best and hopefully will get lucky to watch some of the decent ones.

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who

Ultimate masturbation: Shigoki no yama (Japanese) [The Ultimate Masturbation]

I would never know what was the point behind making this film. Was it supposed to be a comedy, cos it wasn't. It wasn't even porn. It was just a silly attempt at making something absolutely senseless and ridiculous. The story, as well as direction is equally shoddy. You could laugh for having seen something so bad, but I wouldn't call that comedy. An old man runs a camp about gay masturbation. The explanation given is that gays masturbate for pleasure unlike straight men, for whom the act is seen as shame or because they can't find a woman. One day a straight man shows up and wants to join the camp for his thesis. After discussion, he is allowed in. Rules include that you can masturbate together, you can masturbate one another, but there is no fellatio or anal sex. Some students of course breaks rule. The teacher then talks about 2 forms of masturbation which gives ultimate pleasure. He shows one without touching and then refuses to talk of the other. Somehow suddenly,
