Zecji Nasip (Croatian) Sandbag Dam

This indie film is a really powerful look at how a community can suffocate you and the hidden corners young people have to find just to be themselves in so many European towns, even with all the progress we've seen lately. The whole story plays out while the town is bracing for a massive, raging flood, and you just can't shake the feeling that some kind of intense reckoning or unavoidable doom is headed their way. To be honest, I didn't go in with super high expectations, but the way it’s put together makes it a seriously compelling watch. Plus, it’s not every day you get to see an LGBT-themed movie coming out of Croatia! The story follows Marko, a popular 18-year-old kid who seems to have it all—he’s got a girlfriend, he’s a competitive arm wrestler, and he’s well-liked at school. When he isn't in class, he’s usually hanging out with his brother, who has a disability, or helping his mom out in her greenhouse. Everything gets flipped upside down when a guy named Slaven ...

Câmp de Maci (Romanian/English/French) [Poppy Field]

Poppy Field is mainly a film about things unsaid. Based in Romania, where open homosexuality is not still acceptable, this film takes inspiration from a real life incident by making a fiction story around it. This film is actually very different from a lot of stuff that I have seen, and I have seen a lot. What starts probably a usual gay love story, soon becomes story of one of the leads who is still too embarrassed about his sexuality. Given that he is a cop doesn't help matters.

Cristi is a cop in along distance relationship with Hadi who is visiting him from France. After a passionate time together, we see there is clearly difference in expectations that the two men have of each other and the relationship. Rather than spending time with Hadi, Cristi decide to go back to work. Cristi along with his colleagues are sent a movie theatre where a conservative group has interfered with the screening of an LGTB-themed movie. Among the audience is one of Cristi’s former lovers, who recognizes him and confronts him. Annoyed and afraid, Cristi hits him and this is where the troupe begins. Cristi's anger doesn't subside and his friends try to support him and be with him, each in their own way tries to diffuse the situation and come and talk to him about multiple life experiences. Eventually the situation is sorted and they all go back home.

Even though the story may sound simple, there is so much that's happening here. You really have to watch things very closely. First of all, the film is shot in multiple single take long shots, which must have taken a lot of effort from both the cast and the makers. The opening sequence between Cristi and Hadi gives us an impression that what makes perfect sense sexually for Cristi is also something he struggles with ideologically. Even when his sister visits him, you can sense the discomfort in his behavior. He seems to be a very very private person. When Cristi is caught between the rift in the movie theatre, he stands back for a while , I guess trying to figure out and make sense of where he stands in the whole dispute but when the guy recognizes him Cristi panics and lashes out. Following sequences include multiple of his colleagues coming and talking to him about details of what's happening out and has that guy said anything to anyone. To a regular viewer, these sequences may feel irrelevant, and to be honest for a while, I was also like wtf! But the more I paid attention, my assessment is that Cristi's colleagues know that he is gay. And Cristi knows they know but no one wants to take about it. Based on the conversations thatchy have, you can tell who accepts Cristi’s sexual orientation and who doesn’t just by what they say or don’t say. A colleague comes and shares a long drawn dog story, implying just that he is there for him. The whole sequence can be very frustrating to watch but I think this was something very unique for me. But this can also be its biggest drawback. I feel a lot of people watching the film will get very bored and/or frustrated after first 30 minutes.

The biggest USP of this film is to concentrate on the dynamic at work rather than that of the relationship. The acting by Cristi and his colleagues is really good and given there are single, long drawn shots, it speaks a lot about Cristi's ability to understand the arc of his character, which is very important to keep a film like this together. The film doesn't offer solutions but it does show Cristi taking one step ahead when he doesn't; t hesitate to eventually call Hadi after the ends of day's events in front of his colleagues. Things will get better for Cristi but aspects of the wider damage done by prejudice in the LGBT community is going to still take long time. (7/10)

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Drug Shore (Chinese)

Apparently tis film was adapted by a true story Well, true or not, movies/series about drugs are not easy to watch. I have always said that drugs is like the end of life for anyone. For those who sink into this sea of addiction, some manage to swim upstream to recovery, while others cannot make it to the shore. The film may not be the best, but it does have a noble intention to remind everyone of the evil affects of drugs and combining that with sex. Ah Zhe is in a happy relationship with his influencer boyfriend. On his partner's birthday, they end up going to a party, which interestingly is being hosted at a drug dealer's house and this is where for the first time he is exposed to the world of drugs. The duo somehow do it just enough and come back home but next day Ah She gets invited by the dealer Xiao Fei for a meal. The dealer has a soft corner for Ah Zhe, but before anyone realizes, Ah Zhe's life spirals out of control when slowly he starts doing more and more drugs, ...

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...
