This documentary is nearly twenty years old now, and it follows a gay couple as they navigate the stressful and exciting journey of their first pregnancy through surrogacy. You get to see it all— the hope, the nerves, and the dramatic hurdles they have to clear along the way. Back in the day, this was probably a massive deal, but since I’ve known a few gay couples who’ve gone through this exact process, some parts felt a bit dated to me. I liked bits and pieces of it, but I also felt like the film stays pretty surface-level. It doesn't really dive into the deep, complicated reality of life after the baby actually arrives. If only raising a kid were actually as simple as this movie makes it look! Erik and Mark have been together in New York for ten years, and since they feel solid in their relationship, they decide they’re ready to raise a child. They start the hunt for a surrogate and eventually connect with Wen, a wife and mom from Maine who agrees to carry the baby for a standard...
A campy, revenge drama with a lot of comic elements and gags filled by transsexuals and with a title like this, you expect a lot of fun to unfold, which happens to a small extent, but not completely. To be honest, I am not sure of this movie is supposed to be a spoof on the gore-murder-revenge genre or is truly a reflection of hate crimes that happen with trans people.
Bubbles, along with her 4 her trans friends work at a drag club where their queen mother takes care of them. One night, three of them are invites for a night rendezvous by three guys, which soon turns ugly because one of them was not too happy about hooking up with Bubbles to find out she is trans. In an ugly spat, two of them end up dead, while Bubbles goes into coma. With the help of her friend Rachel, fellow drag queen, and the drag queen mother, the three of them decide to take revenge. The three of them manage to capture all three men finally. Making them unconscious, the three women place switchblade knives in the men's asses. In a series of convoluted action sequences, finally the three of them manage to take their revenge by brutally killing all three of them.
As I said before, I am not sure of this was supposed to be a spoof or not. To be honest, I, for some reasons was feeling very embarrassed while watching the film because I couldn't make up my mind to take all this seriously or not. Physical assaults on trans people is a very real concern, so someone trying to make fun of it in the way it is in the film felt disrespectful to me. Plus, the only amusement comes in the catty remarks occasionally exchanged by the girls. Rest seems very over the top, forced and clearly not real. It is a work of fiction and revenge fantasy, as explained by the makers, but I still can't get over how the treatment has been done. Acting is below average especially by the three men. Drag queens are all quite alright and the low budget of the film shows. To appreciate the film, you will really have to keep your brains behind and just watch it for all the silliness of it. Its the kind of film, you see when you have nothing better t o do, don't wanna use your brain too much and finally, not have to remember what you just saw. (3/10)
