This movie is a pretty wild "what if" story about Abraham Lincoln being gay and having a secret thing with his legal assistant, Elmer Ellsworth. It’s all told through the eyes of Taffeta, who is a Black, plus-sized queer person working behind the scenes. Taffeta uses this old history story to try and make sense of their own life and all the crappy treatment they deal with in the modern gay scene. Honestly, the whole thing feels a lot like a stage play, and it just wasn't as interesting as I hoped it would be. The story follows Taffeta, a stage manager for a small theater putting on a show about Lincoln. Every day is a drag because the audience ignores them and the actors treat them like a maid. Things get really awkward when Taffeta walks in on one of the male leads hooking up with a guy Taffeta had just seen on a dating app. To make it worse, the actor playing Lincoln actually tries to sexually assault Taffeta later on. After fighting him off, Taffeta goes out onto the e...
This is a good film to show an actor/directors obsession with himself and self-indulgence. There is not even a single scene in the film that doesn't have the lead actor (who happens to also be the director of the film). I mean it would have been ok if the character was charming, actor brought some freshness to it or things like that but instead his acting is bland and drab and makes you fall asleep with his single monotonous voice without any emotions.
Robert has returned from one year rehab and is finding it hard to connect with lover/partner Christian. Robert doesn't really remember what happened that led him to rehab except he has few vague memories of having BDSM sex with a stranger. Once back, he is already looking for hook-up/connection with ha new stranger named Hugo. Robert finds weird attraction for this guy within two meetings and despite him wanting to take slow, you can see some alarms, which Robert doesn't see. Despite warnings from his friends and his therapists, he decides to go for a weekend with Hugo to his cabin in woods. Hugo's behavior is erratic during the weekend and Robert finally feels something is fishy. He finds out that one year back, Hugo was the one who made a porn video of raping Robert which is now on internet. Robert eventually plans and succeeds in killing Hugo. But there is a surprise in the end, where it turns out that it was someone else all along who wanted Robert dead.
The makers have tried to give this film a nordic noir feel but IMO it fails miserably. The story has potential but it is dragged way too much. Clearly you see Hugo is a pusher and Robert finds it weird but why is he so careless and decides to go on a weekend to an unknown location. Had the equation between two been nothing but love, you can understand, but you can already see that they have issues. I just can't digest this stupidity. The conversations between Hugo and Robert are supposed to have this cat and mouse thriller vibe but they completely fall flat. Robert as a character is full of himself and I would not want to be friends with him. It is always about him. Hugo (both character and actor) was strictly ok, however, much better than Robert at least. The ending does come as a surprise, but not really.
This film is mostly bad because of really bad acting. A better screenplay and actors could have done slightly better for the film. (3.5/10)
