This is a 10 episode, 25 minute each Taiwanese series about two childhood friends realizing their love for one another. The typical friends to lovers arc has been done to death many time but something about the series stuck a chord with me, and I think its because in every episode we see how their friendship started as kids and how ibgrew eventually. It made the series more relatable.
Junxi and Han Tuo have been closest friends since childhood and another girl. Tuo was this shy little kid who'd sit alone on the playground while everyone else played. His home situation was a mess. And this is when Junxi was the one who time and again extended friendship. The three always hang out together even when they are grown up. Tuo is now a ladies man with girls swooning all over him. When Junxi starts to like a girl he asks Tuo for dating advice but is shocked to learn that Tuo actually has eyes for only his friend Junxi. After a few confusing days because Junxi did not see this coming, he also finally gives into love but they both have to handle too many things at the same time. They are in final year of university and have their internships to deal with. Junxi's friendship with Tuo fulfills his need for affection both as a friend and then as a lover. They both even start to love together with Junxi making an excuse to family that he can save time by living closer. Eventually Junxi gets over his fear of rejection when his parents happily approve their relationship and in fact tell him that they have always known and are extremely happy for them both. And Tuo tries to mend his damage relationship with his father. While dealing with internship stress, some jealousy and eventually family acceptance, the couple continues to live together.
I really thought that this was a simple show but with all heart. As kids Junxi was always there for shy Tuo and protective about him but as they grown up, tides have almost turned. Tuo is this popular guy, who shocks Junxi by later confessing he had only dated girls to hide his true feelings for Junxi, which feels honest. He makes all the first moves as adults and slowly Junxi also realizes his love and affection for Tuo. I like how the relationship slowly grows but since this is all new to Junxi, he doesn't want to make it public except their closet girlfriend knowing about it. HE somehow fears rejection from his parents, and so when he cries after parents acceptance, his tears were not born of sadness but of joy. They carried the weight of years of silence, and with them, the heavy stone pressing on his heart was finally lifted. For so long he had hidden his love, afraid of disappointing his parents in a culture bound by tradition and generational values. And all this while Tuo had been right beside him. I agree that the whole story doesnt have anything ground breaking it is trying to say. One can recall many shows that have likely done the same thing but somehow I felt more connected to this series, mostly because of the childhood interactions. Having said that, I do have an issue with how their dating starts with Tuo literally forcing himself on Junxi when he asks for dating advice. I think that scene was totally uncalled for and I wish the makers had shown a better way. The show works mostly because of great chemistry between the lead actors. I also enjoyed the episode when Junxi's elder brother leaves their son with the two friends for a day. Overall, Secret Lover is a perfect blend of heart, humor, and just the right amount of spice and cuteness. Slow burn romance, which will either connect with you or you may find it a bit Ott. I belong to the former category. (7/10)
