I had seen a anime series based on the whole Omegaverse. Chinese series ‘Desire’ is pushing fictional boundaries by becoming the one of the first live-action adaptations of an Omegaverse novel. As a reminder, we have Alpha who are dominant, aggressive, territorial, and usually leaders and S-class Alphas are cut above the rest. Beta are neutral, with low fertility rates and usually inconsequential working-class people. Omegas are submissive, nurturing, highly fertile, both male and females can get pregnant. And finally we have Enigma's, mythical and rare and have the power to tame an Alpha and turn them into Omega. With 16 episodes each of 50 plus minutes runtime, this series demands a lot of attention with focus on two major BL stories and overall corporate larger story.
The main story is about Hua Yong and his love obsession for Sheng, an S-class alpha. He is rich, has looks gifted by the Gods and a talented businessman. To help his father, he has been doing anything to find a cure including working with a rival company whose CEO is Shen. In one of the meetings, Sheng sees Hua Yong- a secretary for Shan and feels like this omega is meant for him. They meet a few times and every time Sheng saves Hua Yong from situations and the two start to fall in love. Even though he seems like an omega, we find in middle of the series that he is actually an enigma who has been playing game sand manipulating Sheng to fall for him by creating these nefarious situations where Sheng can save his life. It is a series of lies, deceit and manipulation shown through a rose tinted glass, but for true love that Hua Yong has for Sheng. The second couple is the rival Shen and his secretary Gao Tu. Gao Tu is an omega pretending to be a beta who has been in love with Shen for 10 years – since their school days. Unlike the other characters of this story Gao Tu is poor and despite working for Shen Wenlang, lives in a shabby apartment because all his money goes to taking care of his sick sister and gambler father. Unlike Hua Yong, he has terribly low self-esteem and Shen Wenlang’s hatred for omegas doesn’t make it easier for him. Their love story is that of heart shattering angst, longing and an accidental pregnancy.
Sheng is introduced to us as someone who has a philandering past and a man who is confident of the power and influence he wields. But what surprises the audience is the ages that the timid Hua Yong has been playing all along. Every incident and instance in his story is a carefully orchestrated move towards one singular goal - getting Sheng to fall for him. Some of these events are quite interesting and the guy acts really well. Balancing the delicacy of a blushing, domestic omega against the eerie, unemotional and almost-Godly presence of his real identity with attractive ease, the actor does a wonderful job of his character. He does feel like an enigma at places. As far as Sheng is concerned, we do see a good growth in him as a person, who feels he has been wronged by his father. The secondary couple is the perfect example of how not communicating can create all sorts of issues. Honestly there is so much going on there that half the time I won't even understand why Shen was always shouting and angry at Gao Tu, why did Bao had to hide his beta identity, why was he so poor etc etc. Having said that the character of Gao Tu was the most realistic and relatable, and the actor playing it really managed to do his part well. What I am still not sure is the relationship between Hua Tong and Shen and why was Shen helping him throughout. Their plot is rushed, somewhat disjointed and left completely open-ended. Now, the characters aside, creating this whole new Omegaverse world and showing BL within that is new and it is going to take time for audience to warm upto it. I will be honest that I was so confused at so many places during the show but I decided to just keep going. Mention of ruts, pheromones and men having morning sickness kept throwing me off time and again. The business related scenes were close to 50-60% of the show. AS someone who wanted to just focus on the BL aspect of this world, these scenes would throw me off completely, also because half of the time I did not understand them at all. The world building is incredible and full marks to the production team for grand sets and not compromising anywhere in building this world but the indiscriminate use of time jumps to stuff in as many plot points as possible begins to weigh down the series especially toward the end. I really was not able to catch up on who/how got pregnant and where dod the kid come from, but honestly by that point I had stopped paying too much attention since the sub plots kept coming in hordes.
This whole concept is new to most folks and sadly rather than keeping the story simple, this is a full on soap opera that demands full attention and some basic knowledge of what Omegaverse is and what do terms like pheromones and heat and other things mean. This is not going to be everyone's cup of tea,. I wish makers had started with something simple but that I say personal view. I believe that the fans of this universe are extremely happy with how the novel has been adapted and the fact that China did not censor the show also shows a good leap of faith. What remains to be seen is that whether China will slowly start to ease its regulations on BL content or this is going to be one off case. (The other show Revenged Love was another good show from the country). Overall, I have bit of mixed feelings about the show, I would recommend that you make your own choice. This will need attention and a time commitment. (5.5/10)
