Fire Island

We have seen very little portrayal of gay Asian American men in US movies and this film takes care of that aspect. Set in the vacation-destination of any gay person’s dream the film explores the friendships and romances experienced by the eccentric group of friends on their week-long outing. To be honest, the excitement for me to watch this film was to see locations, clubs etc that I have visited a few times and just for nostalgia sake. Its been almost 10 years since I went to Fire Island, but I have such fond memories from my trips to Cherry Grove, Pines, Ice Palace (which features in the film) among other things.

We are introduced to the gang of 5 friends. Noah, the head, is sort of the lead and passionate about his friends. His besets friend of more than 10 years is Howie who has never had a boyfriend and he decides that on this trip, he won't hook up till he gets Howie laid. We also meet the three other friends who complete the gang and Erin, their lesbian mother, who got money in lottery, was able to buy a house in FireIsland , which is where these "poor" gay gang stays in the summer. On their first day on island, they bump into Charlie and Will, the good looking, successful, rich kind of gays. Howie and Charlie hit it off really well but Noah and Will rub each other the wrong way. Noah pushes Howie to hook up with Charlie, but the duo are really enjoying each other's company. Things get complicated, when a hot playboy enters the scene and flirts with Noah and the gang, but there is some secret about him that Will knows and wants to tell him, but he just hates Will for his obnoxious behavior and will hear none of it. Thats not it. Charlie's ex-boyfriend arrives on the scene again and Howie is left heart broken again. BY this time, you know where the story is headed. Charlie realizes his mistake and in a very filmy way apologizes to Howie asking him back and Will and Noah get to understand and know each other better and in fact take it one step further. The five friends' friendship is also tested by the hot playboy and when his secrets are revealed. But thankfully, all in all there is a happy ending.

The source of inspiration here clearly is 'Pride & Prejudice'. We maybe in 2022, but within the gay community there is still a whole lot of discrimination wrt body, behavior, ethnicity and of course class and money. Fatphobia, racism, toxic masculinity, and hypersexuality are all very real issues within the queer community. When the two groups in this film go to the parties at each other's house, the disparity becomes very obvious. You see interesting personality traits of everyone in the film. Noah is afraid of putting himself out there for fear of rejection and hence he would rather have quick flings instead of a meaningful vulnerable relationship. Will is quick to form prejudiced opinion of everyone but once you know him well, his heart is in the right place. Howie is the nerdy average Asian gay, who by now believes that no one will ever find him good enough and is surprised by Charlie's interest in him. Charlie is the only plan character who is not given any real depth. The film as a whole has nothing really new to offer and setting a gay rom-com in Fire Island is probably an interesting idea. The fact that this film has come out in the Pride month, for me, makes the viewing of this film extra special. Don't ask me why, but something about this month, celebrations all around you , makes you wanna watch some of these rom coms. The film really shows the physical and emotional desire between Noah and Will, and even Howie and Charlie, highlighting the intricacies of queer relationships.Made for gays and by gays, it has gay lead characters, gay love interests, gay heroes, gay villains, and gay people of color galore. There is no single straight person in this film and I love it.

It’s a funny, sexy, and fresh film that gives me the same feeling as hanging out with other queer people in queer spaces. That sense of understanding and not needing to hide yourself is captured in the writing and overall good and positive performances in the film. This is old wine in a new bottle, but this works and how. Its the perfect summer gay film with a happy ending that I needed in this pride month. (7.5/10)

I watched this today, liked it tons. Your review is spot on, "new wine in an old bottle." I felt like there was something nostalgic about it, even with it having a fresh spin in many ways. I just love a happy rom-com these days, after finding the genre cringe-worth for my first 50 years of life. I thought Charlie was painted as a lack of a character--one of those guys who is nice, smart in some specific ways, but not too smart in others, ripe for a friend or boyfriend to come in and sort of run his life for him--a really cute, nice, accomplished man who just may turn out to be boring. At least that explanation made him make sense to me. --oh, covid shot went well--after four that made me feel nasty after, this one just gave me a very sleepy saturday and no aches or pains.

I totally get it. At various stages in life, we starting enjoying and appreciating all kinds of cinema, sometimes the ones that we used to find cringe worthy. This film wasn't bad at all.

The kind of rom com I will enjoy anytime. As you said, it's made by gays for gays. I may not know fire island but can totally relate with other gay places in Europe like Mykonos or Sitges. The movie was super funny with that excentric group of friends and of course unsurprisingly romantic in the end. It's a rom com, you have what you paid for and I won't ask for more!

Exactly. your last statement summarizes it all.

I have no idea about the European gay islands. I should probably add those to the list of places I would like to visit someday.

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who

Ultimate masturbation: Shigoki no yama (Japanese) [The Ultimate Masturbation]

I would never know what was the point behind making this film. Was it supposed to be a comedy, cos it wasn't. It wasn't even porn. It was just a silly attempt at making something absolutely senseless and ridiculous. The story, as well as direction is equally shoddy. You could laugh for having seen something so bad, but I wouldn't call that comedy. An old man runs a camp about gay masturbation. The explanation given is that gays masturbate for pleasure unlike straight men, for whom the act is seen as shame or because they can't find a woman. One day a straight man shows up and wants to join the camp for his thesis. After discussion, he is allowed in. Rules include that you can masturbate together, you can masturbate one another, but there is no fellatio or anal sex. Some students of course breaks rule. The teacher then talks about 2 forms of masturbation which gives ultimate pleasure. He shows one without touching and then refuses to talk of the other. Somehow suddenly,
