The Journey To Killing You (Japanese Series)

This dark gritty Japanese BL is something I was not expecting. The story focuses on a Yakuza bodyguard  assigned to kill his young boss. The premise sounds interesting but the execution was just weird. There were lot of problems with the show like violence, abuse, coercion and even forcing themselves sexually. Eventually it somewhere becomes. BL with some nonsense stuff. Thankfully the series was only 6 episodes of about 26-30 minutes each. Kataoka is a respected yakuza leader. His boss has grown old and frail, unable to manage the organization anymore. Leadership now falls to the boss's son, Keito. He assigns Odajima as Kataoka's new handler to keep him in check. Kataoka is impulsive and treats Odajima aslmost as a servant even forcing sex on him. But beneath the rough exterior, Kataoka occasionally reveals a gentler side. Odajima, on the other hand,  is stoic and distant, keeping his emotions under tight control. What Kataoka doesn't know is that Odajima has a hidden agen...

Épouse-moi Mon Pote (French) [Marry Me, Dude]

It was really good to watch a light hearted comedy film. Work pressure is increasing and I needed something that could just cheer me up a little even though briefly. There is only so much that re-runs of Schitt's Creek could elevate my mood, which by the way I strongly recommend. Coming back to this film, its sort of comedy of purposely created errors leading to hilarious situations, even though, most of you, like me, probably will take offense to how stereotyped everything was made to be in the film.

Yassine, is a moroccan student whose family has made sacrifices for him to be able to study architecture in Paris. He is doing so well, except he gets piss drunk the day before final exam and hence cannot finish his degree and hence now his visa is at a risk. He also had a crush on this girl Claire in college but because of embarrassment, he stands her up on the last night. He now works as a labour in a construction project. Fred and his girlfriend Lisa move in next to Yassine and very soon Fred and Yassine become very close friends. Fred is a blond deadbeat with no job and no ambitions and for some reason not interested to marry Lisa. To keep his visa situation in check, Yassine asks Fred is to marry him, which he willingly agrees. Now starts all comedy when the state official Dussart needs to find out of the couple is for real or just faking it. There are many scenes in which he follows the couple or visits them and how then they handle him. Thinks take another turn when Yassine's mother shows up unannounced and Yassine then introduces Lisa as his wife. The mother now starts planning for his wedding. Meanwhile Yassine is still crushing on Claire at work but she still holds grudges. As expected, the secret eventually comes out when Yassine confesses. The mother is shocked but Claire eventually comes around and Fred finally realizes that he actually likes men.

The story of the film is wonderfully written to keep bringing in comic relief every now and then. There is never a dull moment in this fast paced film. Each character brings something fun. Now, the situation son Fred and Yassine trying to act gay, even though funny feel slightly dated on how gays are stereotyped with their clothing, mannerism, sex obsession, over the top clothes. I felt weird but then I looked from another angle that maybe what they were trying to show is that still many straight guys are so ignorant about gay world and gays in general that in their mind, this is how gays live and behave having no clue whatsoever about the similarity of lives and ways that gay men have with straight guys. It made me feel less bad but I wish how they would have kept at least one stereo-free gay character. But I guess most mainstream comedies like to take the short cut to bring some laughs. Chemistry that Fred and Yassine share is amazing. Fred was definitely my favourite character who literally takes everything he does to his heart and does with passion, be it the fake marriage, dance competition or anything else. Some of the random characters like the loan shark and the blind guy also added good funny moments. The whole Claire angle was very underbaked and really didn't add much. Maybe they just needed an arena for Yassine to have. a reason to speak out his truth. Another thing was how sake all the Moroccan scenes looked like. And why were they all talking in French and not Arabic?

Keep your mind aside, and just try to enjoy this film. Try to not be offended with typical stereotyping. The film is not showing homophobia intentionally. I was entertained for a change. (6.5/10)

Typically the king of comedy I love. Turn off your brain, laugh and enjoy. It's full of stereotypes and so what? The way I see it they start ignorant, and end up more educated. One of them realises he is gay, and doesn't end up all queen for all that. And if he did that would still be ok. I hate it when people go all offended by principle and are the same who go watch Drag Race afterwards (it's a fantastic show, but can you blame stereotypes, really??). Anyway.
No wonder Fred and Yassine have great chemistry, they are really well known in France as part of "la bande à Fifi", a group of actors/friends that always do the most hilarious movies together. If you want a good laugh with goofy humour I sincerely recommend you go watch some of their movies : babysitting, alibi.com etc... The energy they have is contagious. Cherry on the cake, they always add a crazy number of geek references, it's a pure paradise for a video game/manga addict like me (don't watch Nicky Larson if you don't know the manga, you'll miss 90% of the movie...)
Btw, Marocco was a former french colony, they speak both french and arabic :)

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

Drug Shore (Chinese)

Apparently tis film was adapted by a true story Well, true or not, movies/series about drugs are not easy to watch. I have always said that drugs is like the end of life for anyone. For those who sink into this sea of addiction, some manage to swim upstream to recovery, while others cannot make it to the shore. The film may not be the best, but it does have a noble intention to remind everyone of the evil affects of drugs and combining that with sex. Ah Zhe is in a happy relationship with his influencer boyfriend. On his partner's birthday, they end up going to a party, which interestingly is being hosted at a drug dealer's house and this is where for the first time he is exposed to the world of drugs. The duo somehow do it just enough and come back home but next day Ah She gets invited by the dealer Xiao Fei for a meal. The dealer has a soft corner for Ah Zhe, but before anyone realizes, Ah Zhe's life spirals out of control when slowly he starts doing more and more drugs, ...

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...
