Benediction (UK)

This film is the biopic about British war poet Siegfried Sassoon. Now, I know nothing about the poet, his work or his life, so I went quite blind into this film hoping to see something spectacular because this film is being hailed by critics all over as of the best films to have come out this year. How I wish, that was true!! Sure the film shows us all about his enigmatic history, his personality, his poems, his despair about death and life’s purpose and most importantly all the wrong men he loved; it just never did enough for me to care about any of those characters. We meet Sassoon, a budding poet, as a soldier fighting in WW1. But when he writes a blistering letter about atrocities happening in war, the authorities declare him mentally unfit to serve in the war, to avoid treason. There he meets and falls in love with another patient Wilfred Owen, who is also a poet. They both encourage each other but are never able to act on their love and soon Owen is sent back to war and ultimatel...

B-Boy Blues

I have such mixed feelings about this film. For some odd reason, I wanted to like it and I tried my best but there were so many places it just didn't add up and gave me a bad web series vibe. Set in New York, the direction left a lot to be desired giving a major amateur feel (which it is not). I feel the story was good, actors had potential but somewhere it came out as a very wannabe film trying to address multiple issues within black community, especially gay. Mitchell is a successful black man working in corporate industry who has recently ended a disastrous relationship. He swears to be off men, but fate has different plans. He meets Raheim, a hunky, absolutely gorgeous courier guy all of 24 year old and sparks fly immediately. We witness their romance build-up despite repeated warnings by Mitchell's friends that the 'get' rough trade, young guy is just using him and he will end up being heart broken. Raheim ends up meeting friends and family and everyone is smitten ...

I Am Divine (Documentary)

Ok, I have to admit that I knew nothing about the documentary going in, but it all started to make sense when I realized that Divine is none other than the 300 pound drag queen and lead of film "Pink Flamingos", a film that I hated. But now having seen this documentary and a whole lot of background behind the director and the lead, it is all starting to make sense. The image of a 300-pound drag queen wearing a skin-tight red dress with candy-colored wig, bombastic face make-up, and pointing a gun at everything society consumes to be beautiful has been burnt deep enough into the culture to be instantly recognizable. We are here to know more about Divine aka Glenn. Talking head interviews with family, friends, and colleagues; most notably John Waters, Glenn’s mother Frances, childhood friends, members of The Cockettes, and fellow performers from the off-Broadway show “Women Behind Bars,” paint a vivid picture of the kind of influence and impression Divine had on the people clos...

Better Days (Filipino Series)

This six part mini series was a very simple and cute story about 2 childhood friends who reconnect during the Covid lockdown. The show isn't fancy or anything. It is pretty basic but the two leads have enough charm to see it through. Also the run time of every episode is about 15-18 minutes, so its an easy breezy watch. Kian returns to his childhood country home to spend time during lockdown. He is hoping to reconnect with his childhood friend Aron, who is their caretaker's son and whom he hasn't seen in many years. The two friends are excited to see each other and Aron can't get enough of the amazing food that Aron cooks. They have affection for each other but neither knows exactly what it is. There are bouts of jealousy when Kian sees Aron with a neighbor girl and similarly the feeling is returned when Kian's friend comes to visit him. Kian, doesn't get along well with his father, so he wants to reopen their family restaurant with help of culinary skills that ...

Ai no Kotodama (Japanese) [Words Of Devotion]

This film is about friendship, love and sometimes jealousy that comes with all these things. Thankfully the film is just about 75 minutes long, so an easy watch, but. The transitions between scenes and emotions are so quick, that I found it hard to keep myself connected and emotionally invested in either the characters or their bonding and relationship with one another. Shinya and Miyako are friends from high school. Now in college, they live together in a small rented flat and their relationship a secret to avoid any drama. Things take a turn when a girl from their high school comes back in their life. Miyako welcomes her with open arms but Shinya is not so keen, since he is also jealous about the fact that in school there were rumors about his boyfriend and this girl dating. Slowly Shinya becomes unfriendly and even hostile towards his boyfriend leading to misunderstandings and the duo deciding to take a short break from one another. Meanwhile, a common friend of theirs who is gay an...

Alaska Is A Drag

I saw this short film of the same name many years back and was quite excited to see the short getting a full length feature adaptation. The film is more like a dramedy where accepting one's gender identity, acceptance, coming out blend really well with still very prevalent homophobia and sexual discrimination. Having said that I did have higher expectations of the film, and somehow the film dragged and not in the good way that I would have expected. Leo and his twin sister Tristen have lived in Alaska for ten years after their father George moved them, and mother Lucy up there with the reason of toughening them up but grown up now, they both dream of leaving the state in search of their mother and becoming drag stars. Leo works in a fish canning factory while Tristen is dealing with chemotherapy. Leo has always dreamt of becoming a drag superstar. But the straight colleagues of his always give him a hard time, bully and beat him which has been going through high school and so he ha...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

Moral Rules (Greek)

This story takes place in 7 acts in a form of a cinematic theater play and is apparently an adaptation of Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening. Set in Greece, the primary story is about two guys exploring their sexuality. The characters of the play display elements that potentially belong to each one of us, from sexual curiosity and promiscuity to fear towards the unknown, and from superficial communication to moral hypocrisy.  The play starts with two friends hanging out and one of them getting naked (which in my mind was an attempt to seduce the other one). We are not told their ages that is supposed to be. The naked guys also shows naked sex videos of himself with a girl which excites the second guy. The first guy asks him to come to his home and maybe they explore more. We then see the first guy seducing a girl and having sex with her. In third act, the two guys are back alone and they both end up having sex but right after that the first guy snubs the second guy asking him to lea...

Island: The Series (Filipino)

OMG! I don't even know where to begin. Five minutes into it and I knew already that this was going to be bad. Actually calling the show bad is actually being nice to the makers. The series was disastrous and atrocity in ever single department that you can imagine. From story, to location, to acting to direction. Surely this was done by amateurs but amateurs of another level. Sitting through even 5 episodes of 2-30 minutes was a task and for the first time I just gave up after 4th episode. I dint want to know what was really going on, I didn't care who all these random characters were, who kept coming or nothing at all. I just didn't care about any of that. This show was that bad, very confusing, messy, unrealistic plot. I think somewhere in Episode 4 things started to make sense , but by then I was in such a state of bad shock that I had to give up. Different characters of Markus, Drake, Yeah were all starting to become fuzzy and made no sense whatsoever. I couldn't kee...

Burn Your Name (Canada)

This truly felt like an indie film. The way the acting was done, the very natural dialogues and the whole presentation was real. The story is firmly places in the realities of human conditions, of relationships, of sex, of friendships, gender and/or gender preferences, of love and how it has the power to triumph despite all odds and yet, at the same time has the ability to bring you to your knees and leave you feeling empty. Yes, the film does test your patience with it being a very conversation focussed story and probably also nicely suited for a stage play, but there still was something charming about the film. Brad And Emile are best friends for a very long time. Brad is straight and a struggling musician, while Emile is gay and works as an actor. Emile, has a roommate Michelle, who is a dancer and has just returned form her East coast tour. When Brad gets evicted from his apartment for non-payment of rent, Emile asks him to move in with them. Emile and Brad's friendship start t...

Nervous Energy (UK)

This BBC film about the ups and downs of a gay relationship where one of them is suffering from HIV, this one had a promising script and good actors, but it could use some serious rewriting when it comes to screenplay. At various points the films just drags on and you find yourself starting to lose whatever little interest was created in the first place. An American man Ira lives in London with his partner of many years Tom. His illness is almost the stage of AIDS and of late Tom has become erratic with signs of dementia. Ira is trying his best to cope up with Tom and his changing moods. In one such manic state, Tom decides to visit his estranged family back in Glasgow with whom he hasn't talked in 10 years. His family, with their reservations, try to house him for few days despite his older brother and his family totally despising him. The visit soon develops into a nightmare as dementia sets in and Tom's health rapidly declines. His brother calls Ira who takes him back to Lon...

Hook Up (Filipino Series)

First of all, actually I did don't really "need" to watch this series to get context on my latest reviewed Mini series 'Unguarded'. Yes, it does provide one tiny context but other than that, having to sit through 8 episodes, each of 20 minutes approximately to witness two silly strangers randomly falling in love started off ok, but really doesn't go anywhere until the last 2 episodes. Also, don't get fooled by the poster. It was just taken form one o the profiles form the dating app that the show uses but has nothing to do with it. Its pandemic time and Mark Lee is unsure about his sexuality. He finds himself being attracted tooth girls and boys. On insistence of his friend, he downloads an app 'Findr' to see where things take him. There he meets Henry and in their very first conversation Henry flirts with him a lot and mark Lee gets shy. Eventually they get to talking all the time and slowly love starts building up. Henry even risks one night to g...

Love, Victor: Season 3 (Series)

The third and possibly the final season if this famous Hulu queer coming-of-age series ends on a positive note for all its protagonists. Although at certain places it did seem rushed, bit overall I had a sense of satisfaction seeing that every character was given importance, they were all given substance and they got a touching (maybe not realistic) happy ending thatchy all deserved. Romance is fickle in this teen drama, yet not without its merit and relationships at Creekwood High seem to come and go at rapid speed. Lets analyze that later. The season 2 ended with who will Victor choose at the end between Benji and Rahim. It turns out he does visit Benji and he cannot get him out of his mind, but Benji has drinking issues and in order to get his life in order he needs to go to rehab and break up with Victor. As expected Rahim is upset by the way Victor handles the situation but trie friends can't remain apart and soon they are friendly. A new romantic interest is thrown for Victor...

Driving Not Knowing

Why? Why do filmmakers sometimes get so over indulged in thinking thatchy are making such a masterpiece that they stray away from the every basis of film making that can convey the story and message that they ant to portray. This film in a random rambling and a very uninvolved piece of work, that fails to hold your attention just after the very first 10 minutes. I struggled to even comprehend what was happening and if I was seeing random scenes, what were the timelines and what really is the problem. Will is a poet and he lives with his boyfriend Lee who is a musician. They have occasionally worked together and indulge in sexual flirtations but Lee is definitely more involved in relationship than Will is. When Lee realizes that his romantic feelings for Will cannot be fully reciprocated due to Will's sexual confusion, Lee abandons Will and moves back to his rural hometown. A year later, Will, alone, has lost motivation in his work. Lee has seemingly got himself on the right track, ...
