These days we see very few gay romantic comedies, so it is always a welcome break when you get one. Sure, the film is extremely predictable and you know what exactly is going to happen but charming characters make this film watchable even though the plot is filled with giant holes. Also, I wish the makers did not make it. Bit soppy in last 25 minutes. It would have been better to keep it fun and light throughout.
David and Quique have been together for 15 years. He has secretly planned a road trip across US ending in Vegas where David wants to marry Quique, but when Quique rejects his marriage proposal, David is dejected. David is so obsessed with the idea of getting married that he starts reaching out o his friends and acquaintances, if anyone would want to get married to him just to fulfill his dream. Enter Esteban, a pilot, who saw David at their common friend's wedding and kinda liked his free spirited nature. When the common friend introduces them, Estean agrees to marry David in Vegas since he also happens to be there for work. The duo spend time together and sparks fly and then get 'married' or more like friends commitment ceremony and have sex. Next day Quique shows up promising to marry and they go back home to Spain. While Quique starts planning for wedding, David realizes that his partner has always been full of himself and he doesn't love him any longer. He breaks up with him to see if there is any potential with Esteban. After a misunderstanding between them, the duo eventually come together with a hot passionate kiss.
The first thing that stands out is the normalization of sexuality (which is the least you would expect n today's time, but it is still good to see that). There is no identity conflict or social rejection: queer characters exist without the need to justify their presence or their orientation. They live, love, make mistakes and discuss commitments like any couple. What was weird for me was the whole 15 year relationship between David and Quique. At David's best friend and work partner's wedding, Quique doesn't go. Even weirder is that this girl has another gay pilot best friend Esteban and some how David and Esteban have never met each other, despite them being very close to her. Maybe I am dissecting too much. Leaving these aside, the film was mostly lightly tones focused on David's obsession with the idea of getting married (but in reality t was the feeling of being loved) and how Esteban comes in to sweep him off his feet with too much melodrama or questions asked. Overall, it is a sweet and charming film about a man with self-doubts searching for love, and discovering himself. Mostly fun and light hearted, it gets bit emotional towards the last 20-25 minutes and regains its mojo at the end. The high point of the film is the energy and infectious enthusiasm that its lead David brings to the table. Overall an enjoyable film, not to be taken too seriously. The title refers to a plastic doll acquired in Area 51 that David and Esteban buy just before their wedding. (6/10)
