Another BL drama about heartfelt exploration of first love, growing up, and finding the courage to be yourself. To be honest, from a story perspective, there is not anything new here; but it's the treatment and the very charismatic lead actors that made this series fun for me. Although I was sad by one fact. Korean series were so good about keeping episodes short and fun. But in this series of 10 episodes, each episode in approximately 45 min, give or take, making it almost double the time it takes to watch other Korean BL series.
Heesu and Chan Young have been the closest friends since they were kids. Heesu is a self-proclaimed dating expert, whom friends and schools pupils reach out to. Ironically he himself has never been in a relationship. He has long harbored a crush on his best friend but hasn't done anything about it. We are then introduced to class president Seung Won, who has a crush on Heesu but has barely ever talked to the guy. And then finally we have a girl Jiyu. When Chan Young starts to fall for Jiyu, that makes Heesu jealous. Heesu comes up the idea that he will try and make Seung Won fall for the girl which will give his friend back. Unknown to him, Seung and the girl have been close friends for ages. So while we see Chan Young wooing the girl and actually even getting into a relationship, Heesu never stops trying to get Seung together with the girl. The problem is that Seung also doesn't want to reveal his true feelings for Heesu for fear of rejection, despite his girl friend reminding him nonstop that he needs to take a step forward. Anyway, eventually Chan Young makes it known to everyone that he is really with the girl, Heesu starts to feel feelings towards Seung that he did not have before. He is very confused by that and eventually first confesses to Chan Young that he used to like him before but not now, and then to Seung on how he is into the guy. A few fights eventually make the happy couple come close.
As I said, the story is not new here. We have web of connections of friends where A likes B who likes C and all that. Plus none of them want to confess their true feelings, make it a bit frustrating, but in this show, the ensemble cast brings raw, nuanced performances, portraying the messy, tangled emotions of youth with refreshing honesty. Despite having seen it all before, there was something refreshing and the treatment of the show that made it a nice pleasurable watch. It’s a beautifully intimate series that examines how love evolves—sometimes beginning, sometimes ending, but always leading to growth. Through Hee Su’s journey, the drama captures the bittersweet reality that even after finding love, fear and caution often linger, especially for those who must navigate a world that isn’t always welcoming. I loved the family dynamics of Heesu living with his three sisters. The show also uses space metaphors on every episode. The vastness of the universe mirrors the vastness of human emotion: full of unknowns, unpredictable, but always worth exploring. Yes, it does get a bit annoying when the pattern starts ti repeat on Heesu trying to hook Seung Won with the girl, them pretending, Seung not open about his feelings etc. In all this, at least there was a straight forward love between Chan Young and the girl. They at least managed to communicate and share their thoughts and feelings. Actor playing Heesu is gorgeous and has the most attractive smile. The two other actors and the girl are all cute and do their job with sincerity. Heesu in Class 2 is a moving coming-of-age story, told with sincerity, hope, and the quiet courage it takes to reach out for love. Because at the end of the day, love is love, complicated, messy, beautiful, and worth it. Besides the usual flaws, I wish the story was not stretched so much and could easily have fit into the normal length episodes for a Korean BL. (7.5/10)
