Secret Relationship (Korean Series)

This Korean BL series delves into an interesting world of passion as three suitors vie for the heart of a man named Daon. Sadly, the very definition of relationships seems to spell disaster for him. He was constantly played, dictated and his boundaries were pushed; simply because they couldn’t stand seeing with someone else. The story is quite intriguing I must say, especially as the layers peel. But it is also a bit confusing and convoluted at the same time. The show has 8 episodes, each of 35-40 minutes (which is quite a contrast from other regular Korean BL content).

Told us through a few flashbacks, here is what I understood of the story. Daon works in a an office, and he is good friends with a college professor who he has known from college. This college professor is Mr Too Goody shoes and takes care of Daon a lot to an obsessive extent where he even gives money to his abusive father. Slowly Daon starts to get feelings for him, but when he confesses his feelings, the professor guy rejects him and tells him that he just prefers this friendly arrangement. Daon is dejected but arrival of a new colleague cheers him a little. Sung-Hyeon joins the office as Daon's colleague and the two have to work together n multiple projects. Although Sung-Hyeon first starts to like Daon, eventually Daon falls for him even harder. This is a relationship that may have some potential. But aa storm comes in the form of the director in the company. This guy is also someone whom Daon knows from college days and apparently the director, Daon and the professor used to be friends. The director used to like Daon in school/college and Daon also used to like him. But for some strange inexplicable reason; the professor guy proposes a deal that the director and he should fake date, since they both like Daon and that this will then not come in between their relationship. (Yes, this makes no sense at all). Anyway, now in present all three of them are vying for Daon's attention. While the director is quite aggressive in his approach and uses his position of power, it turns out that the professor guy is no less psychotic and plays mind games and hires folks to hurt Daon's family so that Daon can still be under his mercy. It's only the colleague Sung-Hyeon who truly loves Daon. After a series of incidents, everyone's truth slowly starts to come out and as you would expect it's the true love that wins.

This show screams toxic relationship at all levels. 90% of the storyline displays the professor's obsessive tendencies and the boss' aggressive behavior. While it might sound addictive, there is only so much Da-On can handle, being pushed around by two men, whom he trusted implicitly is painful & aggravating. what do you think happens when a psychotic professor, a bad-tempered rich boss and a persistent, loving co-worker falls in love with a hard working and charming boy-next-door fella? Toxic chaos. OK, let's start from the beginning. Firstly, I still have not understood when he boss guy liked Daon and he also like him back, why would he agree to a contract of a fake date which prohibits you from dating the guy you like and love. It just doesn't make any sense at all. That whole situation made no sense. Then this professor guy who always is so nice to Daon , so why does he reject him when Daon confesses his love to him? I mean th boss guy had already gone abroad at that point. He keeps Daon on hook for so many years, only to get total psychotic towards the end stabbing himself first with knife and then again trying to kill Daon. The boss was no less crazy. He didn't care about workplace ethics or the company's reputation. He was ready to lose contracts just so that he could show Daon his place. And even for Sung-Hyeon, we are never clear why he likes Daon so much! It was so sad to look at, worrying, crying, begging and still Daon refused to date him and kept pushing him away. Even so, this dude kept coming back like a puppy playing fetch until he got stabbed and almost died. And finally, why are all these three folks crazy in love with Daon. He is a simple, docile, hardworking lad just like any boy next door. Is that it?

The acting form all actors is good, but just some of the basics of the storyline didn't make sense, right from the creation of contract. This is an interesting chapter in BL, since we show a lot of love but never traits of toxic love or obsession in as much clarity as this show where these traits are at the forefront of the show. I think there are still learnings to take from here. I was also slightly disappointed with the finale, just wish it was more focused on Da-On and Sung-Hyeon. I just feel we didn’t get enough of their romance. Overall, a decent show with a novel premise, only f the reasoning behind all this was as strong as well. (7/10)

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who ...
