Glasskår (Danish) [B.O.Y. Bruises of Yesterday]

This film is a story of a 16 year old young teen who is suffering, is lonely, prone to self-harm and worse. This story of our protagonist doesn't give us much data on what bruises or tragedy from childhood pr past he is carrying with him and the way one summer unfolds takes him into a vortex of degradation, humiliation and masochism which hurts just to watch it.

Tobias is a young 16-ish year old introverted young man who loves skateboarding and is eager for love. His mother doesn’t have time for him,  so she sends him to spend the summer with his out-of-town grandparents. His grandfather is a glassmaker who teaches his grandson the basics of the profession; his grandmother has dementia, but she gives the boy the little affection his parents fail to provide. When granny's health takes for worse, he goes off for few days to his father's place but he is also busy with his new family and has been equally absent. The summer days seem to drag on forever; there’s nothing to do in the countryside, so Tobias hangs around here and there, skateboarding and doing nothing. As Mom becomes harder and harder to reach on the phone, Tobias comes across two men who pique his interest: Aron, a handsome, easygoing house painter, and Jonas, a standoffish but handsome and rude stranger, who works as a male sex worker and waits for his clients at a bus stop and Tobias meets him at a public bathroom. Tobias hits off well with Aron and lies of his age hoping to find love/sex but Aron knows better. He wants to help and he likes the boy but he wont cross the physical limit. When it turns out that the mother never went away for work and has just been avoiding Tobias and when granny passes away, Tobias spirals down in the world of male prostitution. Tobias feels he doesn’t deserve anything other than suffering, which he also inflicts upon himself. He uses sex as a means to feel pain in addition to also self-harm. The film ends in hope that Tobias is getting proper treatment and will get love from grandfather.

Even though we are never told what is Tobias' past, I think the story here is about loneliness and lack of love. It is a film that builds up slowly trying to show the loneliness among young people and their inability to verbalise feelings, especially in more countryside areas, I suppose. It’s a film about second chances in life, about the importance of feeling loved and, most important of all, an urgent plea to not leave our adolescents alone with their demons. The lead actor performs brilliantly on the screen. He is literally in every scene and you feel his anguish, despair and loneliness. While some plot elements are trite, especially in the final act, the film gives visual expression to the teenager’s interior life. The film thrives in its extended silences, when it's just a boy, his skateboard and desolate rural spaces where good-looking men might occasionally pop in. His hurt and self-destructive behaviour is explored sensitively and without testing the audience’s sympathy. This is not an easy film to watch, not just the self-harm but Tobias's descent into prostitution. Tobias finds some friendship and hope with Aron but he also gets rejected there. What was not clear to me was whether it was the boy's sexual orientation that was the cause of all the grief and turmoil or something else? Regardless, the film is an absorbing chronicle of a turbulent adolescence, very depressing and sad, and a meltdown in slow motion where the anger and rebellious in focused inward. (7/10)

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who ...
