En Iemand Anders (Dutch) [And Someone Else]

This nice little film is a subtle, but sharp dissection of family dynamics. The film feels like a carefully directed ping-pong match between family members, in which everyday life unexpectedly sets up as an obstacle which can threaten the happy existence of the family. The scenario, although seemingly simple, exposes layers that are about love, loyalty and the fragile balance within a family. I quite enjoyed this film.

The film starts with Teen Tommy just having graduated, but sadly has also been dumped by his boyfriend and is struggling with the pain of heartbreak. His father, is well intentioned but unable to provide emotional support. His mother supports him unconditionally. When Tommy starts to work with his father Rin his workshop, he accidentally discovers email chain between his father and another man, clearly indicating a gay affair between the two. The young boy doesn't know what to do. Gathering courage, he asks his father about this, who tells him that this man was someone he had a relationship with before the marriage and that their mother knows and now the guy just reached out but nothing happened. Tommy struggles with this info and you can see the weird dynamic between him and his father. It especially becomes tricky since the family is son supposed to leave on a long trip in a caravan. When he cant take it much longer, Tommy sends a screen shot of the mail exchange to his mother who is very surprised. But in a very dignified manner, the couple talks through various options but a strain is clearly visible. This is exactly what Tommy feared when he was unsure of whether to disclose this information or not. Eventually the couple separates for a while to figure things out and in a nice touching finale, Tommy goes to meet this new man in his art gallery, has a very  dignified conversation just to get to know his dad a little more and then goes to visit his father.

The film is layered, but focuses on one central conflict: what do you do when you discover a secret that can tear the core of your family apart? Tommy is faced with an impossible choice: confront his father, inform his mother, or carry the secret in silence. And how do you expect a 17 year old teenager to know these answers. All this while he is also nursing his heart and looking for a new boyfriend maybe. The best thing is that the film is never over-dramatized. Conversations between father-son or the husband and wife are always cordial and with respect (maybe not realistic but in such situation someone is bound to lose their mind). The film does not conform to the conventions of a standard family drama. The scenes do not build towards sensational climaxes, but develop as real relationships do: slowly, with subcutaneous tension, and ultimately with inevitable confrontations. The acting and the direction of the film is top notch. Tommy, as the central protagonist is at the center and does a wonderful job. As a sincere teenager looking to answers for all these questions for himself and his family, you can feel his dilemma. I mean, if a similar situation was to happen to you, what would you do? Both the father and mother are vulnerable, loving and enigmatic. Their priority is firstly their kids and then anything else. If you like family dramas, you will enjoy this like I did. A profound portrait of a family that threatens to fall apart because of sexuality and secrets, but something that is handled with grace, sincerity and respect. (7/10)

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who ...
