Ru Paul and a Christmas drag movie.. now that's something that will get most people excited. Now, I have a confession to make. I have never seen any episode of any season of Ru Paul's drag race and I have no intention of watching them either. My close friends swear by the show and always recommend, but it has not been my scene. Having said that, I did enjoy this campy, parody-is film about Hallmark kind of Christmas laced with almost 100 % drag actors in bits and pieces.
Olivia works for a fashion magazine and desperately wants promotion. All her life she has always worked and never taken time off even for Christmas. Her boss RuPaul sends her on a mission to the tiny Christmas town of Tuckahoe, where it seems everyone is happy around holidays, in order to dig up dirt, smear the town’s merry reputation, and get her hands on Tuckahoe’s crown jewels. Apparently there is a series of competitions that happen around Christmas and winner team gets the crown. Olivia goes as undercover Maggie Zine and in the town ends up making friends with broads from the wrong side of the tracks. She decides to enter the competition with four of these broads. Olivia will change them into superstars and make them win competition. It's easier said that done. The city mayor's bodyguard falls in love with Olivia and her boss RuPaul comes to the town in search of crown. Eventually RuPauls' hidden motive is exposed after the broads won the final competition.
As you would expect, this film is a quintessential drag race holiday movie, so enjoying this film is going to be very very subjective. I do not know any of the actors here but apparently they are some of the most popular contestants and winners of the famous drag race reality show. And guess what, they are not bad. They act campy and over the top, exactly how they are supposed to. The plot is basic with all the cliches that you would expect, but they go well in this because this is supposed to be a spoof and a parody. I enjoyed the straight guys who always took his shirt off in every scene was was actually hot. Of course, there is a lot of singing too and surprisingly I actually enjoyed the last song and dance number that makes the broads the eventual winner. The drag queens come up with some really funny one-liners and some really hilarious moments. In fact I was quite enjoying the film for the first 30 minutes, but not sure why after a certain point, it just felt strictly average. The production quality is pretty basic, not that I would have expected much out of it.
This film is supposed to cater to your inner persona who enjoys everything about drag. If that's you, you may enjoy the film, but for me it didn't do the trick besides a few funny moments here or there. (4/10)
