Gay Short Films : 116

Taps (India)
As they embark on a year of long-distance, a misunderstanding threatens to derail the domestic idyll Akshay and Rohan have built over the last four years. It puts a microscope on a couple who navigate the journey to finding their way back to one another after unraveling. How are they gonna spend their last evening together? Fighting, loving or being naughty with one another? Decent attempt but not great!

Read Aloud (USA)
Justin is a film editor surrounded by performances. Sick of sitting in a dark room watching others, he starts to envision ‘70s cabaret style performances of his own. When a new relationship starts to develop, Justin has to decide how badly he wants to come out from behind the camera. This short film is about performance on and off stage - how Justin performs his roles as a gay man, as an editor, and as a twenty-something sexual being when he meets different guys for hookups.

The Surf Report (USA)
A ghostly love story unfolds as two men look for answers where ocean meets sky and city meets wild in Rockaway Beach, NY. K, a surfer from the Rockaways, goes out to surf one day and never returns. Did he leave town? Go on a bender and never come back? Drown? Freddie, his grieving lover, can't face attending K's memorial service and instead seeks solace in a local surf bar. Inexplicably drawn into a session with a mysterious tarot reader, Freddie finds himself questioning his own rituals and beliefs as he searches for answers. What begins as a lark turns deadly serious as the film glides toward a tragic reunion. Absolutely weird!

Trigger (UK)
Anthony, a twenty-nine-year-old mixed European actor and cabin crew member, auditions for the reality TV show ‘Dream Island.’ The casting director immediately asks stereotypical questions; about his sexual orientation and consequently his taste in men. The questions become darker and more disturbing, triggering a flashback to a London house party, and a traumatic event in his life. A short about sexual consent and the misinformation that surrounds it. As this topic is still considered taboo in our society, many people remain silent, suffering their trauma alone.

Angelo (Spain)
Twenty something year old Angelo is suffering heartbreak after his longtime girlfriend leaves him for another man. Angel is forced to find a new version of his life without her in a new city. When he thinks all hope is gone, a sexual encounter with an old male school friend reawakens him and forces him to question everything he thought he knew about himself.

Aadat (Pakistan) [Habit]
Aadat follows the story of a teenager who dares to hire a male sex worker to explore his sexual orientation in an Islamic state. A sex worker who has done this before a few times. But before things could go further, the police puts a raid in the seedy motel, taking money from he teenager to let him go. This captured the fear of being queer in Pakistan so well. That ending was also deeply realistic and horrifying at the same time.

A Bronx Story (USA)
Two queer Dominican men living in Bronx, New York, navigate modern-day relationship's trails and tribulations while trying to keep their love afloat going through moments of how they met and where they are today. Devoid of any dialogue, the chemistry of lead actors (who are absolutely smoking hot) is undeniable, their intimacy unapologetic. The sex scenes and nudity are tastefully done, serving to enhance the genuine portrayal of their bond rather than merely titillate.

Opening Night (USA)
A high school teenager navigates the final minutes before his first stage performance, which includes experiencing his first kiss - unfortunately, in front of a live audience. Despite his rising anxiety, he finds comfort in a fellow classmate as they share a romantic moment. A simple sweet gay short with two really cute teenagers.

Stockholm (UK)
A young gay man embarks on an unusual first date in a conquest to take control of his past. The two guys meet in a bar and after a few seconds of flashback, it becomes clear that the former has had a fairly recent traumatic experience that he is determined to recover and progress from. There are some clues that one of them may have raped the other in past but I found the lack of definitive context in the flashbacks just a little disconcerting and confusing for the short film to be effective to meaningfully say what it really wanted to say.

Encontrando Juntos (Guatemala) [Finding Together]
Love story between Eddie and Byron, a couple that begins their relationship prior to COVID-19 and are forced to navigate the complications that the pandemic puts in their way: distance, work, and having to live together without knowing if their courtship will work. A gentle perspective about relations, fears, frustrations in a difficult period which a lot of couples went through during the Covid times.

Homo's Voetballen Niet (Netherlands) [Gays Don't Play Football]
19-year-old David is captain of his soccer team. When new teammate Frankie shows up, the two hit it off immediately, much to the chagrin of David's bigoted father, who is also the team's coach. Despite his father's antics and with a little help from Frankie, David gains the courage to be himself. The version I saw had terrible subtitles but you do get the summary even without it.

Raro el que no es raro (Mexico) [Weird Is Who's Not Weird]
Alex is on a mission to pull hunky Samuel. But Sam is straight. Or is he? He's got a girlfriend who flaunts her power over him by making him kiss other guys and perform other tasks she sets for him. But she's wary about Alex. We find out that Sam has a past so she's keeping a tight rein. A very nicely done short film about attraction.

Blue Night (India)
2 friends are enjoying a fun evening together drinking and cleaning in anticipation of arrival of the girlfriend of one of them the next day. Little do they know that the drunken evening is gonna change the relationship that these 2 friends share. A decent under 5 minute short film, that shows with our really showing.

Sannapäiv (Estonia) [Sauna Day]
Under their tough exteriors, two friends long for a desire for connection, veiled in secrecy. The two bodies, having exited the sauna, venture into a lake together naked. Relieved and soothed, the two men finally enjoy the serenity resulting from the expiation they have just endured. This scene metaphorically represents that these bodies have undergone a process, a transformation both desired and beneficial.

Boyfriend (USA)
Two beautiful guys just meet by accident and have a crackling chemistry. They hang out together, chill and one of them feels like he has found the perfect guy. When he tries to kiss the guy, he backs off. Turns out that there is just a small problem. The other guy has a boyfriend.

One Day Miracle (Thailand)
Toon, a young, gay, introverted man suffers from hand tremors. One day, as a favor, he is asked by an auntie to take care of her son, Point, who is also gay and has paraplegia. The two spend a day and a night together in confusion until they discover the miracle of physical and emotional healing. Very novel thought but honestly extremely boring at a length of 40 minutes. This one needed to be crispier and shorter to make its point across.

St. Augustine (Australia)
Theme of identity and mental health is the focus of the film showing Harry and Davos as a gay couple. Set on the confines of a murky seaside retreat, inspite of Davos’ doting tenderness and desire to help, Harry finds himself closed-off from all contentment – with subtle imagery suggesting internal conflict. Despite a smidgen of romantic gravity between them, Harry is forced to overcome his own existential identity crisis in order to save himself and his relationship. This melancholic watch has an enigmatic ending, hard to comprehend.

Staccato (Ireland)
Thomas Croydon is busy rehearsing for his debut piano recital. His attention, however, is divided elsewhere - to the young gardener Sean out in the grounds, whom he so desperately wants to keep. A cautionary tale of a passionate affair marked by class divide and betrayal and a secret romance resulting in a possessive, power-play and a betrayal. This one was a bit confusing, to be honest.

Wetstone (USA)
In a lonely and quiet place in the wild, the couple Theo and Nick find a strange and mysterious stone of which they take home. A few days later, the couple splits and Theo ends up discovering the peculiarities of this rare and powerful stone that brings many intricate problems to him and the people he knows. An extremely weird film.

Xavier (Brazil)
Musician Nicolas notices that his eleven year old son Xavier spends his time not only playing drums, but also notices that his son is attracted to boys rather than girls and wants to encourage his sexuality. A beautiful and tender portrayal of the fact that of you get support from parents at young age, things will always go in your favor. After all, Love is Love.

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who ...
