Herec (Czech Mini Series) [The Actor]

"Herec," which means 'Actor' is a compelling portrayal of a young gay actor navigating the oppressive regime of early communist Czechoslovakia. It shows how he is used by various people for their benefits focusing on the realistic depiction of the political pressures faced by artists during that era, particularly the forced use of actors as spies for the state. The miniseries is a study of human character and acting in extreme situations where the question of the hero's morality and behaviour is far from clear. This three part series is a gripping thriller, where each episode is 70-90 minutes long. Now this may not be a gay story per say, but its quite relevant since the story os about a closet gay upcoming actor, who is used by communists to get intimately involved with some powerful men and what the repercussions are.

Set in the 1950s during the communist regime,  Láník is introduced as a talented yet undera-ppreciated actor grappling with the challenges of the theater world. He lives with his sister and granny and the building super is threatening to throw them out. Desperate to look for a job, Lanik gets a job as a repairman in a university and starts chatting with the Maths professor showing him his immense potential with Maths. The professor takes a liking for him and slowly seducing young Lanik and takes him to his weekend cottage. They are caught in the sexual act by the secret police and this is when the audience gets to know that Lanik has been working with secret service. An officer knew he was gay but he has been using him to lure prominent people who are probably homosexuals. All Lanik wants is some money and an opportunity to become an actor. Now that we know his secret, the officer gives him his next challenge to out one of the very prominent military guy whom they suspect to be gay. Most of the episode goes into how Lanik uses his charm to get close to this officer who eventually starts trusting him. In fact, Lanik even starts falling in love with this guy hoping for a better future but secret service eventually gets to him too. In parallel, the building super is constantly harassing these folks and rapes Lanik's sister who eventually with her boyfriend eventually beats him up but are now terrified of his life. After what happened with the precious officer, who ends up killing himself,  Lanik is interrogated and tortured but his handler saves him. The trio of brother and sister and Lanik decide to cross the border somehow and most of episode three focuses on how they use up all their resources to cross the border but trouble awaits them when they are all arrested before they could fulfill their dreams. The ending brings another twist exploring the moral dilemmas and the personal costs of compromising one's integrity under oppressive regimes. Láník's journey underscores the profound impact of political pressures on individual lives.

I loved this series. Despite not knowing much about the communist times in 50s (besides just few films/shows), this series is a thought-provoking, intelligent drama that delves into the complexities of human nature under totalitarianism. I mean the twists and plots and how Lanik goes about doing his things is just brilliant story telling.  It is expertly crafted to take you on a journey full of tension, surprise and brutality. It really captures the claustrophobia of living in a country where everyone is watching you, and anyone could betray you. The first two episodes are shocking. I could not believe what the communists dared to do. It is worth to wait for the end, because the third episode brings perfect film tension, as well as it shocks the viewers with a conclusion, which made me perfectly stunned. And what a great actor is the guy who plays Lanik. He has charm, wit and just seems perfect for the role. He was amazing and as an audience you just never know what to expect from his actions or from the storytelling perspective. Al other actors did a fantastic job and how the secret services used the knowledge of Lanik's homosexuality to get things done for them was an eye-opener. No, what I would like is a prequel series of sorts where it would be nice to know on how did the officer of the secret services come to know about Lanik and how was he recruited. It would make an excellent series in my opinion. (8.5/10)

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who ...
