Now this is the kind of all gay film that I remembered watching back in 2009/20 time frame. Campy trash, my guilty pleasure, with hot. Perfect body guys and a bit of story also to go along with it. I am actually surprised at myself that I didn't find this film half as bad as the reviews online were, despite watching it in 2021. Yes, there are all the cliches, but there is actually an alright story behind all the fluff and makeup. After all, how many gay murder mysteries have you seen before?
The story is set in a loft complex where all the residents are gays. An alpha male Justin, who has recently lost his older professor boyfriend is talk of the town, as he is young, sexy and is sleeping around making his way to anyone and everyone. His close friends want to set him up with a new resident Jim, who also happens to be a private detective. We meet a few other characters , but things get weird when Justin's corpse is found floating in the swimming pool. His close friend Gene hopes Jim to look for the killer since the police thinks that he OD'ed. As Ji starts his investigation and starts talking to individuals, we see that everyone is holding their own secrets of infidelity, orgies, hook ups, inferiority complex and pretty much anyone could be a suspect with a motive for murder. The real reveal comes as a shock although towards the end I saw it coming but still a surprise.
The film visually is good to look at. Handsome guys, almost half naked most times and goes what.. decent acting too. After the initial character introductions and all, the story is set into motion and we see the investigation going. Initially I felt The Who PI was very lame and basic but by the time climax rolled it, it all made sense. The one issue of the film is that the murder happens of a person who is not very loved and is obnoxious, so you really don't care for him and also when the secret of the murderer is revealed, you feel ok with him getting away with it, which ideally should not be the case. There is a lot of talking in this film, which makes me wonder if this was originally set as a play. The sets and premise is pretty basic and could do well as a play. Overall, surprisingly an ok decent fare, especially when the film started and I thought this is going to be a trashy and bad ride. (5.5/10)
