What The Duck: The Series (Thai)

This Thai drama was about 20 episodes ranging from 35-45 minutes in duration, so clearly it took me a while to watch all of this. Like you would expect for most shows, there is a lot of side parallel stories and scenes that maybe don't add much to value but give a good credibility to character and story building. The series focusses on one main couple (aren't really a couple yet) and another gay pair primarily.

Pop has just joined a new job in catering for airlines at an airport where he befriends Oat. Oat is an orphan and has gambling problem. What begins as a joke to seduce Pop, starts becoming serious when Oat finds himself really liking Pop and wanting to be always around him and helping him etc. Meanwhile, he keeps saying that he is not gay. Pop has a girlfriend Mo, who works as a stewardess but is constantly being troubles by a group of fellow stewardesses who always are trying to bring her down. The pilot Nick likes Mo, but she tells him that she has a boyfriend. Mo, brother is Pree, who has just proposed to his boyfriend Rambo, but due to his father's pressure Rambo has to now marry a girl. This breaks both their hearts. They try to get back together a couple of times, but Rambo ends up cheating and they breakup for good. Meanwhile, it turns out that Pree has always liked and loved Pop since school days and so he tries to pursue him knowing very well that he is his sister's boyfriend. Oat's closeness to Pop starts annoying Mo, who watches the 2 boys kiss.. Meanwhile, Pop and Oat have this beautiful friendship and journey established that they both enjoy each other's company. Many times Pop thinks about who he loves, what this really means, is he gay etc; in fact the duo even kiss but it's never very clear what do both men want from this. Clearly they both love each other, but what will it mean for them eventually.

These kind of dramas are hit or miss and I had my apprehensions when I started watching it, but the great chemistry between the actors really has saved this series. Oat is undoubtedly the lifeline if the series. The guy is serious, loving, funny and everything and he has just done a marvelous job. Also, for a change he has a very different distinctive look, because otherwise all the gorgeous Thai boys start looking the same after a while with their perfect complexion and skin. His chemistry with the cute Pop is really good who also does a good job of showing all the confusions he is going through. These actors are age appropriate and totally believable unlike some of those high school BL stories that get supper annoying after a while. (This series had a few loaders for the cargo who were equally irritating). All the scenes between Pop and Oat felt natural and not forced. Their relationship has a gradual progression which is totally believable because Oat never gives up. Pree's and Rambo's relationship is a tricky one and very judgemental. They both have faults. Rambo doesn't standup to his father when he is being forced to marry and wants to keep both the girl and Pree happy. He cheats on him as well. And meanwhile, although Pree hasn't gotten over Rambo completely, that doesn't stop him from pursuing Pop, who happens to be his sister's boyfriend. The relationships here were way too messed up. It seems Pree and Rambo are the more popular characters in this show, which I am shocked because I must say I loved the bickering between Oat and Pop, and their story is very cute.

Remember, a lot of scenes will feel repetitive and slow; so watching this series in full is going to take pateince so be ready for it. This is a long time investment but its not bad at all. (7/10)

Haven’t watch this thai series but it’s very popular now entitled “2gother” I’ve seen alot of tweet about that in twitter. BTW, The lead guy is very hot, I believe his name is Bright. I think it’s work checking out.

I couldn’t finish this series. I do recommend SOS and Dark Blue Kiss for more well acted and written Thai BL.

Sorry, I meant SOTUS

I am watching Dark Blue Kiss these days. one episode a day, liking it so far. Maybe i will pick up SOTUS next.
I could watch this a while ago because it stars my favorite BL actor ever (Mew Suppasit) but it is not so good. It might have been a good watch years ago but Thaïland has produced many great shows since WTD and it just can be forgotten now. I did not like Oat, wrong choice of actor here, not handsome nor cute. Pop was great, and that's it for me. Mew did his best I believe, so did Art, it's like there was no script or direction. If the pandemic should last forever and Asian countries would stop producing new shows, we'd have time to catch up. In that case, WTD could probably rank somewhere at the bottom of a top 100.

Correct. Last one year had been plethora of good BL shows. In retrospect, if I saw this today, I may not rate it as high

Well ! @Golu, @ Gerald from France,

After reading your comments, I am inclined to say that your review comments are quite realistic, although, I fully agree that it lacked to be called a good series, and it was very slow but I am deeply touched by the ending of WTD 2 Final Call. The important part is that it was able to touch that emotional level, which is beyond body and sex. Which is purely a love is love type of concept.
Had I known earlier that it was not a happy ending drama, I must have refrained myself from watching it.

From the words in your comments, it sounds that you guys have already watched good quality BL drama. Would you mind to share a few recommendations for me to watch it? I would appreciate if you can put it in a prioritized list of your rating with the best one to watch first on the top.

If any of your recommendations are non-happy-ending, please do mark in parenthesis against the title to warn the readers here and help them make a decision whether they want to see it or ignore it.

Eagerly waiting for your recommendations!

Thanks in advance.

heck out the comments posted in here

a couple of folks have put in a list of some good BL series in order of priority. I haven't made my personal list yet, and to be honest, may never get to it. I watch so much stuff, good and bad, I really don't want to make a list.

One other way, I can recommend is to filter by country and rating on my blog, search for "Series" and you will definitely find a good recommendations. As far as happy ending is concerned, I 'd say almost 95% of these shows have a happy ending, so I won't worry too much about that.
Hi ! Since you liked what the duck and somehow managed to connect, I believe you will like almost any thaï show.
Now, is watching the best ones first a good idea ? If I could go back in Time, I would probably make different choices. My best suggestion will be to watch in order of appearance.
You may also search the blog for the highest rated ones; we all have our favorites but everyone generally agrees upon what a good show is.
Sotus / Sotus S is a safe bet for you and it will pave the way for more intense shows after that.

Thanks @Gerald from France, @Golu.

I agree, and am following the same trick actually to pick up titles from other people's recommendations and ratings on different websites or online comments. But the only thing is that usually it is just a hit and trial method and mostly "taste" may not match with other viewers' choices.

No @Gerald from France, I did not like WTD that much. It was way below the standards to be called at par. Especially, it deserves downvotes for overacting, weak plot, extremely slow dialog delivery and unreasonably unrealistic characters. It was far away from what one could see happening in real life. But I appraised it only for one thing that the intention was to show the real love between two characters. The love that makes one to devotion and makes one find the happiness in happiness of his lover. The love, which is beyond body and mind levels of intellect. That 'idea' of love touched me deep inspite of all lows in the series. Otherwise, most of the Thai and other asian BL series are monotonous, with repeated and almost similar storylines. There is hardly anything worth watching in next webseries as it becomes the same old story in new faces or ...even worse, the over-exaggerated gayness in their own definition of gay-shades. That's why I asked your recommendations as your thoughts were almost on similar frequencies.

But anyways, thanks to both of you for kind inputs and time to reply to my comment.

Enjoy !

A small correction to my understanding of WTD story.
While it was the climax where Oat chose to become a monk for sake of the love of his life, I was appalled with the concept of pure love and emotions shown by him for his lover. But I recently came to know that this is a very common tradition in Thai culture where Thai men temporarily volunteer to become a monk or get ordained in a monastery as monk for short term, which may range from a week to a few weeks or couple of months.

Unlike, the Satana Dharma/Hindu Dharma, and Indian culture, where a monk is a symbol of renunciation of all worldly pleasures, family, and everything in search of supreme power, for rest of the life. It is believed to be a permanent and life long change which is irreversible.

Now seeing this difference, the story of WTD is no more than sham gimmick to me, which earlier appealed because of this assumed "divine love", "unparallel-sacrifice for his lover" and "commitment".

Added it for clarification of other readers. Interested readers may find more about it in Thai Culture at following post:

If I am correct, you like realistic shows, with a powerful love story, and original setting/plot and you are not into cliché gayish side characters/high school stuff.
Well then, you should go for the heavy ones. I told sunset about you, Addicted, until we meet again. Long Time no see is also a good pick. I will let you try one of these and we'll see if my assumption is correct.

Thank you, @Gerald!

I like the college/high school stuff, but you are right in saying that I would prefer a more realistic love story and powerful emotional bonding than super-flamboyant gayish character drama.

A love, which can happen in real life, is more powerful than a fantasy land with one super rich, super stylish, super talented, super blah blah blah guy in a cindrella type love story which can never happen on this earth for a common man. The enjoyment is in feeling their happiness, their pains, their emotions, and not in hearing a fantasy-land's childish story. I would prefer Harry Potter for such fiction over these Thai drama.

And Yes, Addicted was my first series which made me addicted to these BL stories. I really loved it. It fullfills both fantasy, and real life scenarios. A little drama but still real life characters filled the life in it.

Thanks once again for sharing these titles with me. I will pick up next from your suggestions after I finish TharnType, which I am enjoying quite a bit.

Regards.

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who

Ultimate masturbation: Shigoki no yama (Japanese) [The Ultimate Masturbation]

I would never know what was the point behind making this film. Was it supposed to be a comedy, cos it wasn't. It wasn't even porn. It was just a silly attempt at making something absolutely senseless and ridiculous. The story, as well as direction is equally shoddy. You could laugh for having seen something so bad, but I wouldn't call that comedy. An old man runs a camp about gay masturbation. The explanation given is that gays masturbate for pleasure unlike straight men, for whom the act is seen as shame or because they can't find a woman. One day a straight man shows up and wants to join the camp for his thesis. After discussion, he is allowed in. Rules include that you can masturbate together, you can masturbate one another, but there is no fellatio or anal sex. Some students of course breaks rule. The teacher then talks about 2 forms of masturbation which gives ultimate pleasure. He shows one without touching and then refuses to talk of the other. Somehow suddenly,
