Jack & Joker (Thai Series)

Jack and Joker is a show that tries something very new. This comedy action drama follows two men in an enemies-to-lovers romance, in a very fun, entertaining mix of romance, adventure, and emotional drama. A Thai BL series about a legendary thief and an innocent man who gets caught in the chaos of his schemes. As much I appreciate the makers trying something new, this was a big commitment to watch. There are 12 episodes of about 75 to 90 minutes each plus an almost 2 hour follow up episode called 'U Steal My Heart'. You can imagine, this is almost like 18-20 hours of content. Maybe if you watched the show weekly, you could enjoy it; but I think the mistake that I did was trying to binge watch over a few days and honestly, that was too much to handle.

We meet the two leads Joke(r) is from an affluent medical family but Joker enjoys heists and robbery. When his family finds out, he is thrown out of house. On the other hand Jack is from a humble home who lives with his grandmother and he wants to become a taekwondo athlete. But sadly, his opponent gets picked because of his connections. One of the evenings at a bar where Jack works, Joke helps him and saves his life, unknown to Jack that he is a thief. As Jack and Joke become friends, Jack unknowingly gets caught up in the chaos of Joke's schemes. After one such heist, Joke goes to jail and life is struggling for Jack. A few years later, we see Jack is now working for a ruthless debt collector who doesn't forgive anyone and would go to any length to get his money back and interestingly Jack is the leader of collectors. When Joke comes out and sees this, he is choked to see this version of Jack. But when he finds out the reality about Jack's situation, he wows to help him. After this, we see many many events leading to Jack-Joke becomes friends to enemies to friends and enemies again including a few heists that Joker pulls through. We see Jack taking a stand against the loan shark and turning his life a new leaf. We have plenty of side characters and almost everyone has a BL story going n in parallel to the main characters, including one with the loan shark's son. We also see a sub plot of loan shark's greed and wanting to be the boss of the big city and control the underworld. And the show keeps going on with many plot twists, surprises, comedy and a lot of action.

Jack and Joker starts with promise, thrusting viewers into a gripping narrative of class struggle, where an elite society clashes with poverty. At its core are two men from opposite worlds, entangled in a love-hate dynamic riddled with betrayal, longing, and the quest to navigate morality in a world where the lines are forever blurred. But at some point, there is way too much time spend on apologies and on justifying Joker as “good enough” for Jack, rather than delving into why Joker’s morally ambiguous choices make unsettling sense in a world where facing corruption often requires first understanding it. Thankfully, the dynamic chemistry that the two leads share is the plus point of the show. They transition from friends to enemies, then from enemies to lovers, and go through a long journey to rebuild trust. When they finally grow close, every moment feels more precious because of the challenges they have overcome. I adore all their exchanges, including playful banter, passionate kisses, and heartwarming scenes with Jack's grandma. This show clearly has been handled by experts which you can see the very high production values of the show. Clearly a lot of money was spent to make this. The heist sequences shine through. From clever disguises to tactical maneuvers, the missions are full of surprises. I adore Joke, who relies on wit and charisma to escape tricky situations rather than brute force. Having said that, the show doesn't take itself too seriously. The show touches on some pretty serious topics surrounding the effects of poverty, how the rich play with other people's lives, and there's two suicides because of it. But it's never far away from that cartoon slap stick style of humour that a lot of asian shows use. There is a lot of goofy humour that comes from the 3-4 parallel BL stories that are going on and some other side characters. I can accept the outlandish antics without questioning their plausibility. However, some plot points seem so irrational that it's impossible to ignore the lack of logic.

Overall, the show story was nice with a slow yet romantic buildup of the love story between the two leads, somehow the show felt short of expectations. I felt that there was way too much going on. As I mentioned before, maybe it was my mistake of trying to binge watch rather than maybe watching one episode a day to completely savor and relish everything that was being served to me, but it is what it is. Not everything is perfect, but I respect the series for taking risks instead of coasting on generic ideas. Writing this high-concept story requires creative juice, and the team deserves kudos for their bold imagination. And I truly want to applaud the makers for this, but I won't go that far calling this as one of the best BL stories to have come out. Nonetheless, it is an admirable effort to break from the BL mould and create a fun rom-com. (7/10)

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who ...
