The Journey To Killing You (Japanese Series)

This dark gritty Japanese BL is something I was not expecting. The story focuses on a Yakuza bodyguard  assigned to kill his young boss. The premise sounds interesting but the execution was just weird. There were lot of problems with the show like violence, abuse, coercion and even forcing themselves sexually. Eventually it somewhere becomes. BL with some nonsense stuff. Thankfully the series was only 6 episodes of about 26-30 minutes each. Kataoka is a respected yakuza leader. His boss has grown old and frail, unable to manage the organization anymore. Leadership now falls to the boss's son, Keito. He assigns Odajima as Kataoka's new handler to keep him in check. Kataoka is impulsive and treats Odajima aslmost as a servant even forcing sex on him. But beneath the rough exterior, Kataoka occasionally reveals a gentler side. Odajima, on the other hand,  is stoic and distant, keeping his emotions under tight control. What Kataoka doesn't know is that Odajima has a hidden agen...

Stage Of Love (Vietnamese) (Web Series)

There was so many parallel stories crammed up into this series, that you dont really get time to connect with the characters. I mean, as it is the series is struggling with acting and direction, had they focused on just on the boys love, things would have been much better.  Everything else around distracts you from the main story.

Nguyen is a college senior, who left theatre club because of an accident, even though theatre is his passion. `enter Bao, a fun and active freshman who just joined theatre club alongwith his best friend. Bao gets to play the role of Romeo in the popular play. The theatre club president Khanh reaches out to Nguyen to share and mentor the new actors. Khanh is dating his best friend. After a few days of rehearsal, Nguyen and Bao have started to find a common ground. And even more, the chemistry between the two have gone past the stage of just pure friendship. Nguyen even tells Bao that he likes him but Bao stays quite. He is in fact shocked. But this info gets leaked and Bao is bullied, although Nguyen is always there to protect him. The play eventually happens and is a success. The secret behind how the stage accident with Nguyen happened also comes to light in the meantime. Eventually in a sudden twist of events, Bao's best friend proclaims his love for Bao to Nguyen who then realizes that Bao can never be his love. Bao finally takes the courage to accept that he also loves Nguyen and they both end up kissing.

Although above I have highlighted only the main focus of the story, which is a gay love story, almost half of the other time, there is focus on a lot of other characters. We have the girl playing Juliet, who is obsessed with handsome boys and sometimes write BL fiction. Her older brother is Nguyen's best friend and a lot of time is focussed on his relationship with Khanh. There is another guy in the club who is also obsessed with Khanh and is the actual perpetrator behind getting Nguyen out of theatre. Its just all too convoluted and contrived and after a point I really couldn't care less. Also the acting and the direction is sub par. The characters talk as if they have memorized their lines and just talking it out. There is absolutely no feeling, no connection, no empathy. There is not much of a back story as to why Bao lives alone. Or why does Bao suddenly have feelings for Nguyen at the end. It is all too random. The direction could have been lot more crispier. The only good thing about the show is how cute Bao is. All the girls are shown to be super annoying.

Having seen some good Asian BL stories of late, my expectations from the genre are a bit high. So when I see such a shoddy job, I am disappointed. It may be a big deal to have a gay series for the country as a starting point but as a seasoned viewer, I did not like the series at all. (3/10)

Sei no Gekiyaku (Japanese) [Dangerous Drugs of Sex]

Every person has their own unique way of dealing with loss. This film is as much a psychological thriller as it is a soft porn BDSM portrayal of two young men that makes the film overall horrifying as well as humane. It is really hard to describe the genre of this film in one word. Its important not that the film has some really disturbing scenes so if you go into seeing this film, please proceed with caution. Although any sexual non-consensual activity is not ok, this film has its won strange way of showing that suicide is not the only solution to all life's problems. Makoto is a regular office goer, who just finds out that his girlfriend is probably cheating on him. ON top of it, his parents sudden death coming back from a trip that he forced them to take, he gets completely dejected and decides to commit suicide. Unknown to him, he is saved by mysterious man Yoda Ryoji, and he wakes up finding himself tied up in leather and belts in a very BDSM setting. This mysterious saver soo...

Drug Shore (Chinese)

Apparently tis film was adapted by a true story Well, true or not, movies/series about drugs are not easy to watch. I have always said that drugs is like the end of life for anyone. For those who sink into this sea of addiction, some manage to swim upstream to recovery, while others cannot make it to the shore. The film may not be the best, but it does have a noble intention to remind everyone of the evil affects of drugs and combining that with sex. Ah Zhe is in a happy relationship with his influencer boyfriend. On his partner's birthday, they end up going to a party, which interestingly is being hosted at a drug dealer's house and this is where for the first time he is exposed to the world of drugs. The duo somehow do it just enough and come back home but next day Ah She gets invited by the dealer Xiao Fei for a meal. The dealer has a soft corner for Ah Zhe, but before anyone realizes, Ah Zhe's life spirals out of control when slowly he starts doing more and more drugs, ...

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin...
