Surveillance 24/7

Thriller films are supposed to excite you and create the thrill.. Somehow it's only after 25 minutes into the film , I could figure out what exactly is going on. Taking the principal e that thanks to surveillance cameras these days, anyone can be monitored from one place to another and it's easy to catch folks. Not that fifths wasn't there, this film would need to change its story, because even in that case, it would have stayed the same. Adam, an IT teacher at an illustrious public school, is picked up by a charming photographer Jake at a gay bar. After spending the night at Jake’s flat, he leaves, but manages to pick up the wrong mobile phone by mistake. When he returns to give it back, he witnesses a couple of thuggish men carrying something that looks suspiciously like a body in a sack out of the flat. Unfortunately, it seems that they were also after the very same mobile that he now happens to be in his possession, and they want it back. Knowing he’s out of his depth, ...

Kenedi Se Zeni (Romany/German/Serbian) [Kenedi Is Getting Married]

The director of this film is known for his socially engaged films and documentaries in former Yugoslavia, which earned him critical accolades but also censorship in the 70s for his unflinching criticism of the government apparatus. Low budget filmmaking and challenging political themes mark Zilnik’s prolific career that includes over 50 feature and documentary films and shorts. This Serbian film has dialogues in a few languages trying to keep the spirit of the region in tact. Although I am not sure what the purpose of the film is, because it just feels slice of life and maybe its trying to make a point against poverty, immigration, gay rights but none of them actually ever gets the focus. Kenedi is a 30 year old man, who is now in a huge dent after building house for his family and is now being hounded by loan sharks to collect the money back. He tried to do odd jobsharer and there but with the daily wages he earns, it will take him forever to make money. When one of the old ladies off...

Pantasya (Filipino/Tagalog)

This film can best be described as a soft porn (don't ask me how and why I ended up watching this). Showing us 5 episodes of men from different walks of life, the main of the film is to show some wold gay fantasies that these 5 men have in the situations they are in and interestingly they all involve men and boys in some sort of uniform. Biyahe - A taxi driver who has just been dumped by his girlfriend, picks up a fare from a student, who is in tears because a female student that he is keen on has gone off with another man.  The driver consoling the passenger morphs into the two of them having sex in the cab.  Linya - A young man working from watching straight porn cannot get a modem dial on phone. Two handsome linen appear to repair the phone, get turned on by the phone and a threesome follows. Laro - A gay player watches scratch game in a local park, then sneaks into the locker room to watch four players take shower and jerk off. After they leave, the gay player sticks up a ...

Hatsu-koi (Japanese) [First Love]

This is a small little indie film that was probably made with limited budget and feels almost like made for TV film. It is a bit naughty at. A few places with a couple of sex scenes.  Tadashi is a high school student struggling / figuring out his sexuality. He is in love with his best friend and is actually called names like pansy and stuff by the schoolmates which force him to go deeper in his shell. One day while he's riding the train, he sees a gay couple and he follows them just out of curiosity. While one of them goes for his job, the other goes home while Tadashi is following him and the gets in an accident. Since the couple is not officially married, the hospital calls his mother. If not for Tadashi running to inform his partner about the accident, he would never have known. There is also a plot line about the gay couple themselves, and how they feel like they are being treated by society, and their families. The gay couple also has a close friend who sleeps around and stays...

How Gay Sex Changed the World (Documentary)

Charting the evolution of public and political attitudes to homosexuality over the last four decades, from decriminalization to today’s advances in gay sexual freedom, the documentary How Gay Sex Changed the World was aired in 2007 as part of Channel 4's '40 years Out' series. It examines how the gay sexual revolution gathered pace in the face of gradually changing legislation, from the first Gay Pride march to groundbreaking dramas such as Queer as Folk. Starting with the legalization of gay sex in private for adults over 21 years old this film moves quickly through the history of male homosexuality in the UK. It talks about how there were no places for gay men to meet, then slowly moving onto a few books and magazines that started to get published where male genitalia would be on display, helping gay men to move away from Playgirl magazines. It then talks about how slowly some open gay bars opened up and how men would meet at these clubs and bars and other various cruisin...

The Walker

To be honest, this film is not what I was expecting it to be. At one hand the film feels like a murder plot being unraveled, but given the drag pace that occurs, it feels like the story is probably more about this aging gay man, whose mistake is to be gentlemanly with everyone, as he puts in his own words "I'm not naive, I'm superficial." Carter Page is the black sheep of a blue-blood American family. His ancestors made a fortune from slavery and tobacco. His father was a grandstanding governor of Virginia. Yet, he is gay and a 'walker', an unpaid companion of rich society ladies as they attend events without their husbands. Quietly gay, he adores his ladies as friends and sponsors a weekly canasta game for them that turns into a gossip fest. Carter is witty an charming and always has the gossip on everyone in the highest of circles. Since he is known to be discrete, he is the one who drives his close friend Lynn, wife of a senator weekly to a male prostitute....

You Belong To Me

There aren't many gay thrillers out there, at least the ones which are well made. This film had a very interesting premise. I think, this needs to be revisited with better actors, tighter screenplay and a good production team, I believe this story can have some good takers. Suspense bordering on thriller is always genre that I look forward to. Jeffrey is a very nice young man who has just spent a night with handsome Rene and feels there is something between them but Rene shrugs him off saying that he is not looking for a sweetheart. By chance that day, he sees Rene with his boyfriend entering into a building, which is possibly his apartment. The landlady of the building Gladys mistake shim for a potential tenant and nnextthilng you know is that Jeffrey has moved into the same building unknown to Rene. Rene is obviously angry when he find this out but Jeffrey is so smitten by him that he ignores signs of ever-invasive Gladys showing a lot of affection to him. Jeffrey still doesn...

Starrbooty

I just maybe one of the very few people who has never seen any of the RuPaul's drag show episode. Nothing against it, but I feel that it will be not my cup of tea. Having said that, I have seen RuPaul's interviews and I find her quite funny. I had no expectations of this film, and went in full aware thatches is going to be over the top, campy and just too much. RuPaul plays a secret agent called Starrbooty. When she gets a call that her adopted niece Cornisha has been kidnapped, she teams with another drag queen Page Turner to find her arch nemesis Annaka who is into kidnapping for prostitution and organs. Page and Starrbooty go undercover as prostitutes. When Starrbooty finally confronts Annaka she discovers that Cornisha was in on the plot all along, and has become Annaka's lover. But Starrbooty is able to convince Cornisha that Annaka was going to double cross her. In a final showdown, Annaka dies thereby saving Cornisha and everyone lives happily ever after. As expected...

Takumi-kun Series 1: Soshite Harukaze ni Sasayaite (Japanese) [And The Spring Breeze Whispers]

Takumi-kun series is a series of 5 films based on the very popular Japanese novel series. The primary protagonist of this series is Takumi Hayama, a high school student at Shidō Academy, a private elite boarding school in the mountains. Set at Shidou Gakuin, a boys' boarding school situated off the beaten track, we are introduced to Takumi. Unlike the other students, Takumi is not from a prestigious background and attends the school to escape from a past psychological trauma that leaves him repulsed by people touching him, and as a result, he is perceived as emotionless and unsociable by his classmates. He tries to stay away from most boys, except his roommate and friend from first year. In the second year at school, Takumi Hayama is allocated a room in a dorm to share with Giichi "Gii" Saki. Gii was brought up abroad and is the school idol with his exceptional academic performance, as well as his good looks. One day, Gii confesses to Takumi that he has been in love with ...

The Shadows

I have said this a few times that movies like this would have been acceptable back in 80s or 90s, but stuff like this coming out in 2007 is a bit unacceptable. It had a terrible story, if you can even call it that, and the way that it was written and produced just made the movie look and come off very badly. Not even half decent actors can save a shoddy plot and. abad direction. Horror novelist Stephen Grimes has to finish his novel 'The Shadows' in 2 weeks. The problem is he is blocked just after first paragraph. One night on a late night drive, he hits a young man Emett, who happens to have the same last name and rushes him to the hospital. A tentative friendship between the two men erupts into a heated affair. Eventually, Stephen decides to give up his demanding "real life" with Emett and his friends helping. Soon thereafter, Stephen finds out that he has been the patsy in an elaborate con, and looks for the answers in the shadows of his former life. From now on, w...

Chris & Don: A Love Story (Documentary)

Most of us should have heard the name Christopher Isherwood (writer of the hugely popular 'A Single man'), whose many stories have been made into films. But we dont know much about his artist partner Don. This documentary chronicles the lifelong relationship between the author and his much younger lover. Chris & Don combines present-day interviews, archival footage shot by the couple from the 1950s, excerpts from Isherwood's diaries, and playful animations to recount their romance. Chris & Don tells the story of a romance that began on the beaches of Santa Monica in the 1950s, when Christopher Isherwood at age 48 met Don Bachardy who then was eighteen years old. Isherwood, an established author with works such as The Berlin Stories, which helped inspire much of Cabaret, helped Bachardy discover and develop his affinity for drawing and painting as he became a renowned portrait painter during the second half of the 20th century to the present. The film, told through D...

Ang Lalake Sa Parola (Tagalog/Filipino) The Man in the Lighthouse

This is an independent gay themed film which feels like it was made on a very shoestring budget, mostly because the production quality doesn't seem that high. But then the film came back in 2007. I was surprised to see a few very explicit sex scenes, which I dont think I have seen in any other Pinoy movie before. Set in small town Lobo known for its lighthouse, we meet Mateo, the 20 year old caretaker of the lighthouse. The local legend says that the lighthouse in inhabited by a fairy who seduces desirable men who can then never marry. He has been doing that for 3 years and since has been dating a girl. City boy Jerome soon arrives into town and Mateo becomes his caretaker. Mateo is also looking for his father in the same town who abandoned him. Jerome befriends Mateo and before you know they get into a physical relationship. The day of Mateo's wedding is when Jerome leaves back to Manila. Mateo cancels his wedding and goes to Manila to be with Jerome. Jerome welcomes him ...

Soul Maid

I normally despise these silly wanna be gay comedies because they are always done so bad. This film was no different in essence but something about the story I found a little interesting. IN fact I caught asking myself, why am I not hating this film. This, by no means, mean that I liked the film. I did not, but I think if a better screenwriter had done something with the story, this had some potential. Moses lives with his hag Ruth. He works as a underwear clad gay housecleaner being employed by horny gay men. He has been having seizures during which he has a religious "visitation" from the goddess Glintentica. Moses meets David, so called straight guy and they both fall in love. But this in unacceptable to Glintentica. She takes over Moses body and converts him to a straight man. Now Moses is on a mission to convert all gay men to straight. From google search, David figures out a way to get rid of Glintentica. Apparently the reason she is doing this is because she was c...

Socket

What a lame idea for a film! Get high on electricity and use that to your advantage/disadvantage. The makers probably thought that this going to redefine thriller genre but OMG! it was pretty bad. Right from the story and screenplay to the acting, everything was pretty bad with no explanations given on why anything , at all, is happening. Dr. Bill wakes up in the hospital because a lot of electricity passed though him, but he should be ok now barring few nerve damages. Hot intern Murphy who has been taking care of him wants him to join a self-help group to get over the incident. Things are odd at home where his TV doesn't run anymore. His lesbian friends try to help him but no use. Bill eventually shows up to the self help meeting where people share the horrible story of getting electrocuted and how this group eventually 'saved' them. The group joins hand and connects themselves to a generator where electricity passes through them and Billy finds himself naked in bed w...

The Gay Bed and Breakfast of Terror

From the very first dance number, I knew this film was going to be bad. But I wasn't sure how bad it will be. It was very over the top as you would expect from a movie of this genre and a poster like this. I wonder if this was supposed to be a trashy spoof comedy, because it would have been so much better. Sadly, I had to bear the ungodly story, acting and the overall premise for almost an hour and 45 minutes. The mother-daughter duo of Helen and Luella run a gay bed and breakfast far away form the center of the town. Its the weekend of the biggest party in town and we meet 5 gay/lesbian couples who are forced to stay in this BnB because they did not make prior arrangements. We have all stereotypes covered. A leather daddy and his boyfriend who happens to be the drag queen, a twink with a richer and older troll, an upscale gay couple with their annoying fag hag, an entrepreneurial lesbian couple and finally a singer and a tomboy lesbian couple. Luella also likes girls but Hele...

2 Minutes Later

This is the probably first of a kind lesbian/gay man buddy movie. Add suspense and detective, and it's a recipe for further interesting subject. Sadly, a lo0t is left desired in the execution of this film. The story of the film is actually quite simple and doesn't offer much to look forward tp and hence feels a bit stretched. Kyle Dalmar is a famous photographer who suddenly goes missing. We see that he is being shot by someone. Few days later, a friend of his hires a lesbian named Abigail to find out secret behind Kyle's disappearance. We then meet Michael Dalmar, Kyle's twin brother who is just 2 minutes younger than him but the brothers have not spoken in 10 years. Incidentally both brothers are gay. When Kyle's assistant mistakes Michael to be Kyle, He pretends to live his brother's life but Abigail soon finds out the truth. Now Abigail and Michael are on a trail of talking to all models and people whom Kyle had shot through his camera. Eventually they ...

Tchaikovsky (Docu-Drama) (UK)

This film is a docu-drama, made for TV BBC film that came out in 2007. An autobiography of Russian musician Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), this film dramatically shows his past and also is laced with his music pieces when the narrator goes around in present days and talks to various musicians. Tchaikovsky was very young when he was sent to boarding school. Having lost his mother at the young age of 14, he started training in music and soon starts getting popular. When he becomes a college professor, he meets his first love who inspires him to compose for Romeo & Juliet, but eventually he dies after few years of cholera. Incidentally Tchaikovsky's brother is also gay and they both along with other popular artists spend time as themselves in an underground gay club. After years of promiscuity, at some point he starts fearing that public knowledge of his sexuality would be the end of his career and he could get arrested, he decides to get married as a cover. He meets A...

The Raven

This is another one of those badly made gay horror films, which I still cannot fathom why it was made. I would be seriously surprised if there wad any audience for such shoddily made films with bad script and even worse acting and direction. Roderick throws a masquerade ball inside a creepy mansion with a dark past. An infamous mass-murder happened there fifty years ago to the night, but that's part of the fun for the posh hotties who show up for some boozy partying. 2 of his friends show up early to prepare for the ball but they get murdered by a man wearing Raven mask. He finds out hat one of his arch nemesis David is also going to attend the ball. Very few guys show up and they start getting murdered one by one in badly executed scenarios and murders. We are later told that during the college days Roderick was a shy but rich kid who was befriended by a farmer's son David, whose aim to get rich. He dumps Roderick as soon as he finds another rich boy. But Roderick gets be...

Skull & Bones

Oh my god! It was actually embarrassing to watch this film. How could anyone in their right mind make a terrible film like this? And by terrible I mean, the worst acting and mindless direction. I was constantly in a state of disbelief and hysteria over the fact that someone actually thought of making this film. I mean the film is not even that old, wherein, I could give concession for this being from a time period where amateur gay themed films were just a starting market. Nathan & Justin are a gay couple who are going through a rough time sexually. But they do share their love for extreme cinema, zombie films and sadistic pleasures (at least in their minds). The though of serial killers and gay rapists actually make both of them horny. frustrated in their obscure university, they decide to invite one of the hotties from their class and rape him. In the drug-fuelled incident, the guy dies but this in fact makes the couple even more dangerous. They decide to go to Connecticut i...

Nächte in Wilhelmsburg: Die Trilogie (German) [Night In Wilhelmsburg: The Trilogy]

This trilogy is actually a set of three interconnecting short sitcoms and was quite interesting to watch. Each of the story is placed an year after the previous one, so its essentially a growth of characters over a period of time. Wilhelmsburg is supposed to be Hamburg’s worst district, where a lot of immigrant population lives. Episode 1: Eine Nacht in Wilhelmsburg Martin, a budding actor, has a crush on Murat, who works in a video store, but doesn't know whether he's gay or not. One day Murat invites him over for dinner but Martin's buddy Christopher however is convinced, that Murat is a gay-basher as Murat lives in the worst part of Hamburg. Martin leaves Murat’s address with Christopher just in case. Love eventually finds its way between the couple but has a hilarious ending when the cops show up. Episode 2: The Lucio Fulci Experience Martin and Murat are going through a rough patch after being together for one year. Murat conspires with one of their friends to...
