My Hustler

This 70 minute Warhol film covers the activities of the "Dial A Hustler" service, as an older man seeks a young hustler for a companion. The fact that the film came back in 1965 says something and I can see that special screening of this film must have done some wonders, but it hasn't aged well at all. But then which one of his film has! The camera pans between a bronzed, blond hustler, statuesque on the sand, and an ageing queen talking on the verandah of a beach house in Fire Island. The queen provides most of the soundtrack: part monologue, part conversation in best New York camp style, witty, vicious, outrageous, etc. Dramatic interest of sorts is provided by the arrival of a female neighbour intent on seducing the hustler, and shortly after of the Sugar Plum Fairy, another hustler, also with a lustful eye on the beach. The three have a bet as to which one will succeed; and the second half is filmed with a static camera in the bathroom while they wash and shave. At th...

The Sergeant

Open homosexuality themes back in 60s in feature films like this must hav been a huge deal, especially in this scenario where the setting is military and we all know how sensitive the whole thing can be. The film is a bit confused with its study of latent homosexuality, but its hard for me to actually make a judgement since the situation back then was so different. A dedicated, decorated war veteran, Master Sergeant Callan, is posted in France in 1952. Finding a lack of discipline under the frequently drunk Captain, he takes charge in a tough, no-nonsense manner. But distracting the sergeant is a physical attraction to one of his men, Private Thomas Swanson, that seems at odds with everything in Callan's personality. He makes Swanson his orderly and befriends him socially, but behind his back scares off the private's girlfriend. Callan's confusion and depression grows and he begins to drink. Filled with self-loathing and unable to act on the natural attraction he feels for ...

A Navalha na Carne (Portuguese) [Razor In The Flesh]

This film was clearly adopted from a play. The atmosphere, storyline, just three characters and a sordid atmosphere with drama happening in confines of a single room, I bet this would have made for a good stage play. Release in 1969, this is definitely not queer cinema, bit given one of the three main characters is gay, I thought to review it here. The plot is simple. We are slowly introduced to three characters who live in the slums area in Brazil. An again hooker, who is struggling to get clients, a gay guy who works as a cleaner and the joker's pimp. First 30 minutes show us the routine of these characters without any single dialogue. Drama starts when the pin wakes up and sees missing money from his table. When the prostitute comes it, they fight and he literally beats her up for stealing. She refuses and begs and says that maybe next door gay guy took it because she saw him with another guy. The pimp calls the gay man and beats him him who continuously refuses to have anything...

Victim (UK)

There are very few gay crime thrillers which can be called half decent. (I am not counting all the horror gay trash we have been served for many years now). I can imagine this film being way ahead of its time, coming out in 1961 and using the word "homosexual" openly. Not only that, it also deals and brings forward a very important issue of blackmailing, which sadly, exists even today in many parts of the world. Jack Barrett, a young boy is being chased after by the police. He has stolen a huge amount of money from his employers. He constantly reaches out to. Lawyer named Mr. Farr for help but after Farr intentionally avoids him, Barrett is picked up by the police. They realize that he was being blackmailed for being homosexual but he would not give the cops anymore details than that. He later hangs himself in a police cell. It turns out the blackmailer had a photo of him with Mr. Farr and he wanted to protect Farr. Learning the truth, Farr takes upon himself to get justice. ...

Délivrez-nous du mal (Canadian French) [Deliver Us From Evil]

This movie can actually be excused for being a bad film, given that it came out in 1969. just about nothing in this film is worth talking about or worth watching. this French Canadian film was produced and shot in 1965 but remained unreleased until 1969 due to its sensitive subject matter. Andre, a young man, does not work but gets full financial support from his parents. He has a huge crush on a man named Georges. He works with Andre's sister Lucille, who also has a crush on Georges, even though she is married. It's time for Georges to take vacation and Andres goes with him, despite being constantly rebuked, insulted and pushed back for following him by Georges. But Andres is only too happy to sponsor and be with Georges at this time even though he constantly is being insulted. But when Georges ends up having sex with women and even find a rich girl to be his wife, André is driven to attempt both suicide and murder because of his inability to secure Georges' affections. Th...

Les Amitiés Particulières (French) [This Special Friendship]

It was so refreshing to see a black and white film with an underlying gay theme, with such old world charm. Released way back in 60s, this film felt so much ahead of item time but then, I dunno at all what France was like way back in 60s. All I want to do is salute the producer/director for taking up the challenge of such a bold subject and treating it with respect, empathy and tenderness that it deserves. The film will be as relevant in today's time as it was probably when it released. Georges, a 15 year old boy begins his boarding education in a catholic school. He is from an aristocratic background. He strikes up an immediate friendship with a fellow student of his own age, Lucien. On discovering that Lucien already has a close relationship with another boy, André, Georges contrives to get the latter expelled from the school. I am not very sure whether it is out of jealousy or whether Georges dislikes the idea of 2 men being so close.  One day Georges sees Alexandre, a youn...

Meatrack / Sticks and Stones

Old 1969 movie that focusses on how relationships were handled in those days. This is a 2 film dvd set but the films were so bad that I am going to write one review for both.  MEATRACK : JC, a bisexual hustler with a mama fixation, sells himself to anyone who'll pay his price: "I said, ten bucks or I'll break your hand!" Turning tricks in the balcony of a movie theater, cruising a bathhouse, or hanging out along The Meat Rack, J.C.'s only interested in cheap sex and quick cash. But when he sees an old coot attacking a Jersey-girl named Jean, J.C. rescues her -- and is immediately forced into making a porno by two knife-wielding transvestites  STICKS AND STONES: Peter and Buddy are throwing a 4th of July Fire Island Party and you're all invited! Leather-Queen George will be there, bragging about his rubber bed sheets. So will The Lavender Guru, a loquacious flower child incessantly babbling hippiespeak, and Bobby, who's "new to this whole thing,...
