Hyde In Hollywood

This is a stage play from 1990 that was televised as a movie back in the day. I can see folks probably enjoying this on stage in theatre, but stuff like this, when seen on TV, just gives a very different vibe. From a plot perspective it is set in 1930s Hollywood, where being gay was big time frowned upon, but as we know there were many people in closet. Her his one such fiction story. Hyde is a successful actor director in Hollywood and has a successful wife as well. He is secretly gay and has a boyfriend David but no one knows about it. One day when his wife has an accident, a journalist goes after him to expose him. The journalist is actually a gossip columnist working for Hollywood Confidential. HE crashes a men only party where he finds out that Hyde has a secret lover. He then turns to blackmail Hyde to give up his love and explore other men in Hollywood who are closet gay. If he didn't do so, Hyde will be exposed in the newspaper. Afraid, Hyde gives into his demands but his b...

Spelen Of Sterven (Dutch) [To Play Or To Die]

This is a short 50 minute dutch film. The movie was weird and I cant decide how to rate it. I hope by the time I finish writing this review, I would have made up my mind. Kees is a bright, handsome kid, crippled by shyness, whose life is devastated by a group of school bullies. He lives in a huge mansion with his parents. Kees is attracted to the ringleader Charel, a beautiful athletic classmate who probably feels an undetermined interest but would never risk admitting (possibly not even to himself) having any gay or bi appreciation. Kees invites Charel back to his home when his parents are away, ostensibly to take revenge and seduce the older boy, but Charel's inability to drop the pretense and succumb to Kees' infatuation leads to a painful conclusion for them both. Kees goes completely berserk and self-destructs. I think that the reason for this is a combination of loneliness, self-hatred and frustration. Kees longs for, but cannot attain the object of his desire. Charel is ...

Andre's Mother

This film was short and touching. I watched it with my boyfriend and he was really touched by it. The film reminded me of another film that I recently saw in terms of a guy trying to mend relations with the mom of his estranged lover.  Cal is an upcoming writer in New York who falls in love with Andre, an aspiring actor. Andre's mother knowing everything still fails to acknowledge that Andre is gay. When she visits to NY from Texas, Andre has to go for an audition forcing her to spend sometime with Cal. She has a hard time dealing with her son's relationship and lifestyle, despite Cal's efforts to become her friend. Andre's grandmother on the other hand is more accepting but her daughter is intransigent in her disapproval. Andre finally falls prey to Aids which further creates rift between Cal and Andre. It kills Cal to see that Andre's mother still would not acknowledge him and maybe blame him for what happened. After the funeral, an emotional outburst from Cal for...
