Bashtaalak sa'at (Arabic) [Shall I Compare You To A Summer's Day?]

This is an experimental queer musical film that uses opera/documentary and other styles to explore gay relationships and polyamory in a contemporary Arab context. The film’s artistic, nonlinear narrative incorporates a combination of live action, animation and music video-style sequences, along with more than its share of sexually explicit sequences. Even though I found the style and experiment quite interesting, including the narratives but overall I wasn't sure why this was made. In the sense that it had interesting representation of urban gay life and relationships but it was very confusing and one of those art for art's sake pieces. A glance leads to a smile, a smile to a rendezvous: every love story begins the same way. At the center of it all, from what I understood, this Arab love story is about a group of men trying to navigate a polyamorous relationship. Three men in a relationship and what each oof them thinks about it, how they got into it, how the meetings happened,...

All Kinds Of Love

This film, set in 2015, is a feel-good comedy about people trying to follow their hearts, whether it involves an inter-generational romance, a middle-aged interracial throuple or an artistic trans man looking for love in all the wrong places. Sadly a treatment of a subject like me would have likely worked in early to late 2000's but somehow in 2022, this subject feels a bot dated, especially the way it has been directed. It feels very obvious and simple and the plot feels contrived and a bit corny at places. It was good to see Matthew Montgomery after a long time. I do remember when I had just started watching gay films, he used to feature in a lot of films. In 2015, just as Supreme Court rules on marriage equality, long term couple Max and Josh decide to get a divorce, except that they have a hard time separating. We see Josh occasionally hooking up with a cop Pete while Max still harboring feelings for his ex. When a young guy named Conrad moves into Max's old apartment, he g...

The Star Always Follow You (Vietnamese Series)

This Vietnamese series is very mellow, given its base in a countryside setting. The series has an interesting premise but the makers have added too many characters and too many parallel stories and they all keep vying for attention. So what happened here is that the leads barely get any time to develop their romance and focus on it, making it really hard to connect with them or root for them. The show is 9 episodes with average 20 min each. Yes, the Vietnamese BL scene is improving but this is going to take time. Dang is a student in city who is not very good in studies and has already failed twice for university entrance exam. Tired of his antics, his mother decides to bring him to the village to his grandma after finding out that there is this teacher in village who could possibly help Dang study. We meet Son, a young man, who has taken responsibility of teaching younger kids so that the family members can work. While not a teacher by profession, he reluctantly agrees to teach Dang. ...

Hypochondriac

I feel like maybe I did not understand this film completely. It is the story of a gay Latin man and his childhood trauma coping up now with mental illness while he is in relationship. The horror for me started to become repetitive with no deep insight into what the resolutions are, what ws real and what was figment of imagination. The film starts with a young boy and his mother in house. It feels like the mother has some mental issues and in a lot she tries to strangle her son. When the father is back, he does nothing much about it. Circa many years later, The boy is a grown man now. Will is now a potter in an upscale boutique. He is in a committed relationship with Luke, and even with their differences, both young men are virtually certain what they’re feeling for one another is nothing less than love. Will avoids talking about his family, especially mother all the time. He has not mentioned that years ago, his father had committed his mother to a mental asylum. Now Will avoids his mo...

TBH (Czech Web Series)

TBH, To Be Honest, is NOT a gay web series. This has a very strong gay sub-plot but the show is mostly about teenage sin a high school and what happens in the aftermath of a shooting in one of the high schools in Brno, where the rules bordering on bullying are set by members of a floor hockey team and their groupies, a girl gang called Bitchez. In ten episodes, Czech Television’ s first original streaming series tells the story of searching for boundaries in the painful world of being a teenager, during a time of manipulative social media. The series has 10 episodes which run from 11 to 15 and a half minutes each In a high school, one day a stranger arrives shooting at students. Maja is an activist who live-streamed her fight for survival and now must deal with the resulting sudden internet fame. Unfortunately, she also streamed the awkward moments between the popular Nessa and her boyfriend, floorballist Luky. Because of the attack, floral captain jumps out of the window. It turns out...

Star In My Mind (Thai Series)

So this is what it feels when you pick a slightly older BL show that is full of cliches, melodrama, and a whole lot of nothingness. This BL series had no real plot, no real conflict, or anything essential to the story that made it an ounce interesting. Thankfully with only 8 episodes of about 45 minutes each, they didn't unnecessarily stretch for 12 or more episodes. But despite all that, this show is a coherent mess. Trust the makers to know how to turn a simple beautiful love story into something so overdramatic that it becomes exhausting to watch. Nuea is moving form high school to university. He has always had a crush on his batch mate Kluen, to whom he confesses on the last day, but all he gets a sa repose is "have a safe flight", leaving Nuea heartbroken and devastated. A year later when they both meet in diversity, Nuea is so embarrassed by what happened, Nuea pretends not to know Kluen around the other students. Nuea insists he has gotten over Kluen and doesn'...

Três Tigres Tristes (Portuguese) [Three Tidy Tigers Tied a Tie Tighter]

This Brazilian film centers around the trials and tribulations of a group of three queer individuals in the working-class suburbs of Brazil. The film tells the story of three young queer people in São Paulo – two of them residents, the third a visiting relative there for more sobering reasons than simply a casual stopover – as they spend roughly a day together traversing the bustling streets of a city they feel they can conquer, if they can muster up the confidence to emerge from the shadows in which they have found sanctuary from a hostile world that does not understand their experiences. We meet roommates Isabella, a student, Pedro, a sex worker and Jonata, Pedro’s HIV-positive nephew. Its just around the pandemic's fourth wave, the film moves into the three of them traversing through the city making astute contemplations about the society they live and what the future holds for them, in a Sao Paolo that is bled dry by a memory-easing virus and rampant capitalism. There is no sto...

More than Only: Season 2 'Luck Dragon'

Continuing from the season 1, we get next 3 episodes again of about 30 minutes each which continues to focus on not just lives of Michael and Justin, but this time we do get to see a little more of Brooke and the daughter as well. This season, Michael or Luck Dragon, as Justin so fondly refers to him, must face the accumulating expectation he feels to always be the "rock" in their relationship when a devastating tragedy at work hits a little too close to home sending him over the edge. I am really enjoying this continued evolving relationship of Justin, Michael and their family.  Justin and Michael's daughter Mandy is really starting to grow. One day when she arrives with her friends and Brooke shows up, they realize that its their daughter's first period and as expected she feels comfortable talking to a woman and in this case, it is Brooke, the pivotal parental figure. Brooke soon wants to leave to meet her boyfriend, but something Justin says doesn't sit well w...

Verão Fantasma (Portuguese) Phantom Summer

This horror musical was definitely not my cup of tea. It is one of those productions that throws everything against the wall in hopes that something will stick and resonate with the viewer. In particular, the project attempts to tackle several different genres; romance, comedy, horror, mystery, and musical. The result, as is often the case with films bogged down in excess, is a bit of a muddled mess that is impressive one moment only to transition into aggravating tedium. Martin is on a quest. Long ago, before he understood his sexuality or what it could mean for him socially, he fell for one of his friends, a skinny blond boy called Daniel. Not so long afterwards, Daniel disappeared, and nobody knows what became of him. Sometimes he thinks he catches sight of him. He is now hiding in his aunt's coastal house away from everyone. There his cousin also shows up with her boyfriend and other friends. Martin meets Lucas, a neighborhood boy and together they wanna search for the mystery ...

Moon Manor

Covering the topic of death in film can be done successfully in many different ways, but it's very difficult to make the subject matter beautiful and something that people can connect with. Especially hard is to make it funny and poignant. Interestingly this film is whimsical, funny, and also touching at the same time. Supposedly inspired by a true story (if the end credits are to be believed), this thoughtful script is quite alright. Jimmy, an elderly gay man suffering from Alzheimer's, decides to die on his own terms, as he is aware that his condition will only worsen with time. This spurs him to host a “FUNeral,” a final get-together with loved ones, meant to play out more like a farewell party to honor the rich, vibrant life he has led. Jimmy is a man of many talents. Apart from being a musician, he also has a deep interest in space, is the founder of a famous soft-toy line named Moonie Babies, and has helped people from numerous walks of life embrace their authentic selves...

Gayliens (Web Series)

'Gayliens' is a 4 episode anthology series from HereTV ranging from sci-fi to comedy, where each episode details an encounter between gay men and extra-terrestrials. I have to say that the concept sounded quite interesting, and of course, you have to keep your expectations extremely low, so form that perspective it was an interetsing mix. EP 1 - Love and the Mothman Two neighborhood boys (both likely in closet) decide to go on a drive to get away from family. The black guy makes sure to tell th other boy all about his girl crushes but eventually when dark falls, they both start having banger sex in the car till they are eventually terrorized by the legendary Mothman.  EP 2 - Lapdance from Outer Space Ace, a space-themed stripper in a gay nightclub, agrees to give an odd man a private Lapdance, but is surprised when the patron reveals that he is an alien...and Earth is about to be invaded. This was actually quite funny with the kind of dialogues that were being exchanged. Comedy...

Bu Ben DeÄŸilim (Turkish Documentary) [This Is Not Me]

For those in the LGBTQ+ community who reside in the West, the greater freedoms and civil liberties that have emerged in recent decades have made life more fulfilling for this once-persecuted constituency. But, for those who live in more conservative lands, such rights and privileges have been slower to surface (and in fewer numbers at that). This is true even in somewhat more lenient countries like Turkey, where the somewhat more tolerant and cosmopolitan nature of cities like Istanbul have shown some progress but still lag behind other locales. This has compelled gay, transgender and bisexual individuals to continue to lead more subdued lives than their Western counterparts, keeping low profiles and even unwillingly engaging in traditional marriages to give themselves socially acceptable cover, particularly in more rural and remote areas. This is Not Me tells the story of unhappy gay men who have had to marry women to hide their sexual orientation in the face of societal and family pr...

Queer Lives Today (Short Docs) (UK)

"Queer Lives Today" is a series of diverse documentaries that offer intimate glimpses into the LGBTQ+ community. The series explores the journeys of individuals navigating various aspects of their identities, from sports to adoption to the pursuit of personal expression, all while highlighting resilience and the challenges they face. Commissioned to create 20-minute documentaries, these were telecast on British TV in 2022. The films narrate the tale of a trans boxer campaigning for the right to fight, Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen gender affirmation surgery journey and the struggles of two gay dads undergoing the adoption process. Always, Asifa As Asifa prepares to finally undergo gender affirmation surgery, the disabled trans activist, who is also Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen, reflects on how her life has - and hasn’t - changed during her transition. With Asifa having featured previously in documentaries on Channel 4 and the director, Shiva Raichandani, havi...

Bizarre Again

I have to hand it to the audacity of these French film makers to try and come up with a sequel to a film that was likely panned by most people. I remember I did not like the film at all and felt that the title totally suited the film. Imagine my surprise when I saw this sequel and once more, there could not have been a more apt title than 'Bizarre Again'. We are back in the world of Maurice and Lucas, this time 7 years later to witness whats transpiring in their life. We are 7 years later. Lucas and Maurice have never seen each other again and have no contact since the tragic events of the BIZARRE cabaret in New York. Lucas (is he a trans person? I am not sure since it is never clarified or maybe he is gender fluid) now lives in Denver, Colorado. He is married to a slightly older man who is the father of a 16-year-old child. One night Maurice just visits Lucas and sadly a shocking incident happens the same night. John/Lucas' son Marlon has just stabbed two black guys one of...

Vorrei Una Vita (Italian) [I Would Like A Life]

This was such a bad film. The version I saw had bad subtitles, but I bet you that even if they were good, my views on this film would not have changed. This is a prime example of the makers trying to make a very niche indie gay film, but it is so pertain plot, so full of over the top drama, bad acting and bad direction and just all around a bad bad feeling. Francesco is a 4o year old man who lives with his sister after their parent's death. During covid he finds out that his company has closed so he now needs to find a new job. After getting many multiple rejections because of his age (bizarre!), one of his friend gives him an idea to become a male prostitute. Horrified by the idea, he eventually gives in when he needs money. He tells his sister and neighbours lie that he has gotten work in a hotel. One day one of the clients kisses him on lips and that changes Francesco. He suddenly feels a sense of love. Next thing you know this client is taking out Francesco for dates and they a...

Rosodium (French)

This love story feels like a typical love story, but it flips on you towards the end, which was a pleasant surprise. I may not have understood the end 100% but I think I have gotten just of it. That said, the film does feel like a very long short film of sorts. It's essentially a gay road trip film where you are two guys, going through their own issues come together for love. Starting on a Tuesday night, we meet Noah, an introverted young engineer who needs to take pills due to a traumatic experience and has visions of a child. Next to him in Lohan, a tattoo artist and an asthmatic who likes to smoke and they both are apparently on a road trip with their best straight friend couple. A bond grows between the two men during the trip, they have fun visiting a church where Noah sits and Lohan confesses his impure thoughts, there is a first kiss after a Karaoke night, and there are arguments while bowling.  As days go by they get to know each other while moving from one place to another...

Jaggi (Punjabi)

I had been looking for this film ever since I had heard of it running in a few film theaters. The makers recently released the film on Muni, which gave a lot of people an opportunity to eventually watch this film. Jaggi is traumatic, triggering, and shakes you to the core. But it’s also raw, touching, and unnerving. It is definitely not gay cinema, but the subject that says "Story of a schoolboy’s impotence leads to accusations of being gay, triggering relentless bullying" was something I really wanted to see. Id also like to say that the film has some very disturbing scenes that could be triggering for some people. The film starts in present day where we see Jaggi as he goes through rollercoaster of emotions. He breaks down, tries to jerk off, grabs a gun, writes a letter in his diary and gets picked up his uncle to take him home for his engagement the next day. On the way, they give lift to a man who slowly starts to inappropriately touch Jaggi and the film goes into flashb...

Prisoner C33 (UK)

A one man play wherein Oscar Wilde talks to a younger version of himself in his cell during his time of imprisonment at Reading Gaol for gay sex in 1896, in cell 3, we find prisoner C33. I am not sue how much Iw as able to connect with this as a film, but I can assure that had I watched it as a play, I would likely have appreciated it more. This is 1895, and Wilde is in prison for gross indecency after the details of his affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, his beloved Bosie, became public knowledge. As the aging, wretched prisoner, he is cold, hungry, sick, dirty and bored. He is in conversation with his younger self – a witty, elegant man, dressed in immaculate velvet, with rouged cheeks, who is urging his counterpart to strive for survival. Wilde debates grand subjects with himself. He rails against England and “sound English common sense” and the English education system. He talks of morality and art and faith and God. Is art useless? There is much to say about love, too, from the betr...

Even Sun (Thai Series)

This series has absolutely nothing going for it. Except for the very pretty island location and the surroundings, the whole premise is something that just need not have to exist. The plot is devoid of any logic and sadly it keeps getting worse. What's bad is they have introduced so many characters for absolutely nothin, just to make more and more couples. Its as of someone said here you have 15 people and you HAVE to make a show with them at gun point. Thankfully with only 6 episodes each of 40-45 min, they didn't go through the 12 or 14 episode route hence torturing the public even more. Sun woks as a debt collector for an old man. He is not very good at his job but has managed to stay on just because the boss is a friend of his father. Sun's boss eventually gives him an ultimatum that if he doesn't finish his next debt collection, he will be fired (a young guy has already been hired). To his surprise, Sun must collect the debt from his father, who borrowed a lot of mo...

Here Comes Your Man 2

The season 2 or part 2 of this series/film (depending on how you saw it) continues the story pretty much from where it ended in season 1. Having said that, even if you have not watched the first film, you can easily follow what is going on here. For me, just like the first part, I watched this one as well like a film, even though it was released as an episodic series on Dekoo. This season focuses more on the group of friends than just on either Aaron or Jordan, who wrestle the leads of the original film. The first part had ended on their breakup. Set few months after that, we see how Aaron now has a FWB in Julio. Aaron wants this to get into something serious by going on actual date, but something is holding back Julio. Over the course, we see how Julio's best friend manages to convince him that he needs to live his life and eventually Julio asks Aaron out on a date. It doesn't go as planned but it definitely brings the two men much closer. In parallel, we see that Jordan is no...
