Talk about a train crash. I had no expectations from this show. But after 5 episodes, I was hooked, since it had a very intrinsic storyline and the charters were all well etched and I thought I am going to see something interesting. But oh man, how it just goes down south after this. The story just keeps moving in circles with no substantial addition to the overall thought of what the series was trying to say. The unfunny antics of school students was just annoying and I reached a point where I couldn't sit for this series to end. The fact that I am watching this show 7 years after it came out also makes it feel dated. The show has 12 episodes of 40-45 minutes each
Bank, living in US, has just been engaged to his boyfriend and returns home for a trip to sort out some ancestral property. In flashbacks, the tory is told in present time and 8 years back. Bank and Gulf are stepbrothers and Bank's father makes him and his mother stay with Golf and his family. But Golf hates his father , because he thinks that his father's love for another woman drove his mother to suicide (the reality is far from that). And because of this, he despises Bank and his mother. When the truth comes out and Golf finds truth, he reconciles with his father, but also becomes instantly protective of Bank (also possibly secretly falling for him). Through a series of multiple incidents (one involving Bank's very abusive real father), Golf and Bank start falling for one another; but when the parents find out, they are sent abroad to focus on themselves. In present, Bank is now engaged but Golf is fully invested in making sure that he will win back his old love. In a very rushed finale, Bank somehow has his feelings back for Golf, breaks up with his fiancé and Bank and Golf are now a happy couple.
As the couple fall in love in the past, they attempt to navigate their relationship with each other and with their family in the present. Bank is engaged to another man but is instantly torn when faced with his past love. Golf is so unhappy he's determined to recreate the past rather than try to live in the present. Honestly, the present section for me was the less interesting part. What was fascinating for me was the past and the number of themes that the show had tried to handle in that short period. It covers very heavy topics such as mental illness, abusive parents, dealing with the death of someone close to you, and the problems those of the LGBTQ+ community has by not being accepted by everyone in society. You can empathize why Golf is angry at his father and everyone around him, why he behaves erratically with Bank and eventually starts liking him and being protective of him. But even their romance built up felt half-baked. On minute it felt they have feelings but at the every next they didn't. Also we don't get to hear anything on what happened in the 8 years they were apart. There was a lot of confusing parts nearing the ending that could have been cleared up if they focused more on the Bank/Golf plotline rather than side characters. A lesbian couple, a teacher being forced to come out, another student who likes Bank and his family issues; the makers try to cram up way too many story plots which just adds to the whole confusion . I wished they showed a flashback of their breakup, how their friends reacted to their relationship. The show should have limited itself to Bank/Golf and their family dynamics and issues. All the other school friends side stories should have been completely eliminated.
It's a shame, when a promising plot gets completely derailed. The whole blame here is to be give to the screenplay. The actors were quite good but the story was so disjointed and incomplete. It needed a lot of work. Someone should have fleshed out the storyboards and scripts better before going into production.I know there is a sequel which I am hoping to watch in next few days. I am quite curious to see what is covered in that. By itself, this series ended up being a disappointment despite a very very promising start. (5/10)
