Sebastiane is a film about homosexual desire, BDSM and nude lads running about a desert without much more than a strategically placed posing pouch between them. Imagine this film came out back in 70s, an out in the open homoerotic biblical film set in 300s BC. In 303 AD., the captain of the Roman Palace Guards, Sebastiane, a favorite of the Emperor Diocletian, is suspected of being a Christian and since the emperor believes the Christians set fires in Rome, he strips Sebastiane of his rank and banishes him to a remote outpost in Sardinia with other exiled soldiers. The commanding officer lusts after the brooding Sebastiane, who in the strong desert sun is becoming more mystical, more filled with homoerotic thoughts, more pure, and more aloof from the other bored but playful soldiers by refusing to take part in the gladiator exercises and their homosexual affairs. It is so hard to believe that this film came out back in 1976. The film is so sensual and so sexually explicitly charged, that its hard to explain. Sure, there is not much from a plot point of view. It feels it was made to express the voice of but one man,  the director's,– with additional characters introduced for the sole purpose of roles occupied within the filmmaker's life.But if vintage is your thing, the film has a non stop line up some of the most beautiful gorgeous ethnically diverse men in all kinds of acts of partial and semi and full nudity. I am amazed that the film came out at a time it did. The director was planning to make, and had acquired funding for, a film about his relationship with his partner, Johan.  However, before shooting could begin, Johan was arrested on fraud charges (cashing cheques that he had stolen from their friends) and was being held in prison awaiting trial. I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I actually really enjoyed this thoughtful but totally funny look at an old man trying to understand his son's sexual identity even though quite a few scenes were at the expenses of outdated racist and homophobic comments. But given that the film came back in 1976, part of my brain decided to keep those facts aside and just enjoy this play inspired film. Norman, a young gay black man lives with his boyfriend Garcon in LA. One day he gets a surprise visit from his father who is having a rough time since his wife ran away to Mexico with his brother. He is distraught and so is his son Norman who doesn't know what to do. He ass Garcon to relocate for a few days, but Garcon indirectly comes out to the father which hits him like anything. He is confused as to what he did wrong in bringing up Norman. He brings home a hooker for Norman which he gets insulted by and leaves home. This is an old 70s film which directly actually does not fall in the gay category. There are situations in the film that question whether Paul was gay or not but it is clear that his attraction is more real to wards the girl whom he meets towards the end of the film. So this can be argued. Set in 1930s in Paris during the German occupation time, the film is nevertheless interesting. 7 year old Paul studies in a church run boarding school and visits his home every weekend. For some weird reason he feels that no one at home wants him (including mother, father and elder sister). Soon there are issues between the couple and they split. Paul is no longer in boarding school but school was never his thing. He tries but he just does not like to study. He wanders on the street and like to meet strange men looking for love and acceptance. He does this menial jobs for German soldiers in Paris and make some money out of it. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started watching this movie but Oh boy! was I glad I did. This 1976 movie is blatantly humorous wicked and filled with wonderful performances. I dont even know if I will be able to do justice by talking about the movie here. Terrence McNally's screenplay is the real winner Gaetano Proclo with his wife Vivian is present at her father's deathbed who does not like his son in law. Theirs is a gangster family and just before dying the father asks his son Carmine Vespucci to "get Proclo". Proclo takes the threat seriously and gets in a cab, asks him to take him to the last place where Vespucci might look for him. The driver takes him to the Ritz which a few minutes later we find out is a gay bathhouse. Thats where the fun begins. Proclo puts his name as Vespucci and enters the bathhouse where he is chased by a chubby chaser (very funny) who constantly keeps rejecting hot men because they are too skinny. I was actually surprised to see all kinds of good reviews for this movie. For me, this movie did absolutely nothing. There were a lot of things which were not clear at least to me. The film is set in France in 70s in a boys scout. Marc and Phillppe are 2 of the few instructors at the camp. One night Marc sees Phillipe trying to dress up as a woman. Right after that he humiliates him at every point in the camp in front of students, other instructors etc. Phillipe tries to be friend with Marc but o avail. There are instances where one thinks that maybe Phillipe is actually gay and has feelings for Marc but thats not shown very clearly anywhere. Marc's humiliation goes on and on with Phillipe being his punching bag. Towards the end of the camp when there is a costume party, Phillipe comes dressed as woman and takes punches at Marc for dancing with him. Ultimately Phillipe ends up humiliating Marc that night.
